Best drivers for FX series?

I have one WinXP machine primarily for gaming with an Athlon XP 2600+ and an
FX5900XT card, and am building a Win98SE machine with an Athlon XP 2400+ and
an FX5700 that I'll use for older games (probably overkill for those, but
what the heck). I also bought an FX5500 that will be going into the WinXP
machine that I'm using right now, used only for the Internet and some other
non-game-related applications such as digital photo stuff.

I would greatly appreciate advice and opinions as to which drivers would be
best for any or all of these. I am more interested in stability than in
squeezing the last possible fps out of a game.

Am I correct in assuming that the latest drivers are optimized for the newer
6xxx series cards and would probably not be best for the FX series?

75.90 or later works extremely well on my XP2500/FX5700 system. Very
stable, got a good speed boost in HL2/Source and image quality is great.

New drivers fix bugs in older cards as well as add new features for new
cards. Even the 6x.xx series fixes bugs for the TNT2 cards if you check the
release notes. Also, newer drivers major versions generally have new
features that benefit all cards, such as improved multimonitor support,
application profiles, etc.

That said, I'm still running the 56.72 drivers on my FX5900XT. No problems
with any of the games I play, work perfectly on my 2nd PC with a Ti4200 too
so I have the same options in the same place making it easier to mirror
setups when I move stuff around, and I'm pretty sure the new features in the
later drivers aren't that useful to me - they seem to be mostly for improved
support for LCD panels, especially widescreen models.

Gak, I missed the bit about you using Win98. I'm running XP SP2 on my PCs, I
wouldn't go back to 98 now. Not sure what the drivers are like on 98, you
might not have the same success with them.

That's okay, thanks for your advice for the WinXP machines. I will try the
56.72 drivers on mine. I'm currently using 45.23 with the GeForce4 Ti 4200
in this WinXP SP2 machine. The FX5500 I'm going to put in this has a drivers
CD but I don't know yet which drivers are on it.

I am using 61.76 under W98se with no problems, 66.94 did not go well, so I
went back

Thanks, I will make a note of that.
