Best free OS for gaming

I have built my new gaming desktop and forgot to purchase a OS. So I am processing info to Microsoft for the student version of win8. So in the time being I wanted to install a free OS with a usb stick

Get Ubuntu (Linux) You can play some games until your Windows 8 comes.

Students can get free versions of Windows Server through microsoft dreamspark. Version 2012 R2 is the same (mostly) as windows 8 and can be used for gaming. Even if you don't qualify for the free version, you can evaluate it for free for quite a while. You can probably find a 30 day or so evaluation version of windows 8 on technet.

You can also install the SteamOS beta for free.

It should not take a while for the OS to come. They will include a download link in the email they send you the second you buy it. There is no waiting. I was previously a student and did this ALOT of times.
