So what now; the i7-860 is not a good processor? What about people considering this thing that are not going to OC per se but just want something that's solid out of the box??

if you are talking about processor alone, the i7-930 still beats it. the only down fall is when you get to the other system components being more expensive.

OK, I get that the i3 530 isn't enough better than the Athlon II x4, and that's why it gets the HM. How then do you justify recommending the i3 540 at $140? So it's not fast enough when it costs $125, but the same performance at $140 is a much better deal? Can someone please explain this to me?

Hey, you ought to change the title to read "Hierarchy". There's a typo.

Athlon X3 440 is definitely a true gaming processor. I had Phenom 2 x2 550be, which got unstable after core unlock and so I wasnt happy of using a tried out processor. I resaled it for $85 :) and got the new X3 440 for $87... This processor is a beast in gaming and beats my phenom x2 550 in every game at stock speeds and same system config. I would like to say that gamers now better take a X3 440 and invest more in graphics card & Then you will be happy to have a mainstreamed gaming machine.

Great info, this makes selecting a processor so much easier!

I'd like to add that Fry's has some amazing deals on CPU + MOBO combos:

Even at regular price that's a steal
That is a steal

To summarize, while we recommend against purchasing any CPU that retails for more than $200 from a value point of view

So the fairly likely chance that you will be able to keep your mobo if you upgrade in a year or two, isn't worth spending less than the cost of a mobo? Not to mention QPI, the SLI/Crossfire issues you listed, and on top of all of that straight performance increases.

X2 555BE is the best if it unlocks successfully.....
and moreover the benchmarks of this unlocked quad stands in between 955 and 965.....555BE roxxx.......the price of 555BE is 99$ save around 250$ from getting a i7 920 n put the rest into a decent graphcs card and a cooler for 555BE...
