Solution
i would right now put the money in the bank. I would wait for the new skylake-e that drop in about a year and any of the new amd or nvidia cards at that time. right now there not much more to gain if you go to an i7 on a x99 mb. the newer brodwell will only be slightly faster then haswell.

What's your motherboard? Does it support sli?
If that's the case i'd get another GTX 970 to put it in SLI;
Technically two GTX 980's would perform better; but even on a $5000 budget if you already own a 970 it's just throwing money away.

For some real great overall performance boost, (game load times, boot times, overall responsiveness) i'd look into a nice PCI-e SSD.

Like The plextor M6e;
Asus ROG RAIDR;
Mushkin Scorpion 960GB PCIe 2x Sandforce SSD;

nah its not worth it to get a 980

get another 970
asus rog gsync
samsung 500gb ssd for your os and games

your set.. not even really worth getting a i7 for gaming if you already have a i5
