best gigabit switch and topology for SMB

Hi guys,

need your help. I'm a IT guy in SMB and I recently bought a D-link DGS-1224T gigabit switch and connected it to 3 Dell powerconnect 2624s. I did a star topology with the dlink as the center. I also connected all the servers and the router to the dlink. Is this a good way to setup my network or will the dlink get overwhelmed with traffic? Is the switch any good or could you recommend a better one? I just used the basic cat5e to connect all the switches. thanks in advance!

Im sorry im not familiar with SMB other than server message block....I would use cat6 if you can afford it just because it fully supports gigabit speeds with high network traffic....I use the netgear GS724T switch with all cat6 and works great...
 
sorry about that. SMB = small medium business. I was thinking about using cat6 but the office cabling is using cat5e so I can't do anything bout it. cat6 just offers more bandwidth, right? but cat5 or 5e still supports gigE, is that correct?
 
yes this is correct to some extent. I work at a vocational center and we are in the process of upgrading to all CAT6 and fiber between switches etc. but then again we have lots of money :) Cat5e will probably work fine for what you are looking for
 
When I first read SMB I was thinking Samba 😀

CAT5 and CAT5e CAN handle gigabit feeds, but the max. distance becomes shorter. Cat6 allows up to approx. 750FT in ideal conditions.

As for your switch, what kind of warranty / service contract do you have? Is it with D-Link or a third party? What else does the switch feed? Do you use fiber to the router? If so, you should never see any significant congestion on your end.

Where I work, we use HP Procurve switches, as HP was able to supply us with lifetime warranties. In the apst we've had hellish problems with other companies' switches failing on us constantly - about one a month.
 
SMB could mean a lot things and Samba too. 8)

I've heard that cat6 also offers faster transfer rate than cat5 cat5e.

The HP procurves are expensive right? We don't really need a switch of that level.

Everything is connected via cat5e, we're not using fiber yet but we do have some lc cables but what we don't have are the transceivers.

anyway, all is working good in my network so i don't think i'll be doing any upgrades soon. thanks for all the suggestion guys.
 
I run a 24 port Netgear switch at my house. I host many LAN parties. It is a very good switch so far. It also features two SFP slots. I paid 330 for it. :)
 
good going kdxrider9262. maybe some should put in the switches they use for their SOHO or SMB. right now I have been using 4 dell powerconnect 2624s and 1 link which I bought. everything seems to be in order. the dlink has 2 mini GBICs but never got to use them since they're expensive and all my switches are gigEs
 
If only unmanaged switches and servers are connected to the managed core switch (the d-link) and all the workstations are connected to the unmanaged switches you should be fine.

If you are uplinking the switches with copper make sure they are uplinking at full gigabit speeds. Some switches wont auto switch copper to give a full gigabit uplink. You may need to reterminate the cables as gigabit crossovers.
 
Does that D-link DGS-1224T have management and trunking feature sets?

You might be better off replacing that 24 porter with a 48 port managable switch w/ trunking (802.3ad) support...then you can add as many switches as you want and link them together trunkin' style....

The netgear one that I have is web managed. You are able to make VLAN's and trunk them. It is a "smart" switch. GS724T
 
Hi Guys ! Need some help here Anyone using Dlink DGS 1224T. Can you please help me try to ping back your switch ip address ? What is the ms(milisecond) that you get ? I am getting more than 300ms when I try to ping back my switch(Dlink 1224t). Is that stable ? TQ
