I'm building a $2,000 video editing PC for a friend of mine. He will be using Adobe Premiere and other Adobe products. I'm getting him an i7 5820k, 32gb RAM, and I'm unsure about what video card to use. It seems like the video card shouldn't be a big deal with this, so I put in a 960. Would he need anything more? Is a 960 overkill? He will also be running a 4k monitor.
Thanks!

Hey bud, i own an Z170-PD3 running an 6600k i5 @4.3ghz ddr3 xpg 1900 mhz 1.475 and gtx 960, been using adobe premiere and photoshop on a gtx 960 g1 2gb and works pretty smooth , dont worry about encoding it mostly depends in your proccesor power, takes 1 hour to render a 50 minutes video on 1080p and 60 fps with 17mbs bitrate , so yes, a gtx 960 should be...

But I've heard that Adobe utilizes NVIDIA cards better than AMD

It truly depends on what you are doing, but in any case the RX 480 is significantly more powerful than the 960. I have heard that the 480 compares with a GTX 980 (480 is a little less). I dont know the validity of the claims that Premier prefers nVidia cards however.

If you're just going to be using Adobe, I would get a 1060, 3GB or 6GB really depends on the budget. The 480 is nice, but it doesn't compare with a 980, it compares with a 970. The 1060 is a middle ground between the 980-980Ti, and if you're not using something that utilizes something like DX12 or Vulkan, the NVidia card is going to win. It simply has more horsepower.

As another thought, have you looked into Broadwell-E? Might as well grab that instead of Haswell-E.
