I'm looking for the optimal GPU for 1080p @ 144hz gaming on my rig. Rig is as follows:

CPU: i5-6600K not currently overclocked
MB: Asus Sabertooth Z170 Mark S
Cooler: Corsair H100i-V2
Memory: Corsair Platinum DDR4 2666 16gb
PSU: EVGA Super Nova P2 650w Platinum
SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 500mb
HHD: WD black 2TB
Monitor: ASUS VG248QE 144hz
GPU: 2g EVGA 960 SSC

First build (fired up instantly w/o issues). Clearly I need a new video card (and computer is over-built). Is 1070 the answer for next 2/3 years or is waiting AMD latest better option? No current game favorites but recently retired and built PC with intent of gaming nirvana without issues. Any help appreciated.

Solution
GTX 1060 for 1080p gives a steady ~60+fps, so not an option - need something more powerful.
GTX 1070 should be able to push 1080p at 144hz for a few good years. (later you can reduce graphics and still get 144fps)
Go for GTX 1080 only if you find a really good deal (discount) or if you really know you're going to be gaming a lot and want to be as future-proof as possible.
