Hey guys, I'm planning on replacing my aged Radeon HD 6670 (2011) GPU as I can tell it's nearing its lifespan and wanting to replace it with a much nicer GPU. In a year or two I plan to have my own custom build (probably with i7 6700/6700K) but for now I just want to replace my GPU. Note that I plan to carry this GPU to my new build in the future, which is important to note when coming to your decision for me.

Here are my current specs:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3
CPU: AMD FX-8350
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6670
RAM: 16GB
Storage: 250GB SSD
PSU: 750W

My budget is ~£200 ($290 USD)

Solution

Eh, the FX-8350 is pretty dated by now, and even when it came out, it was outperformed by the 3rd gen intel core series. However, so as to not make it...
The term bottleneck is overused. It is bottlenecking when a piece of hardware is overwhelmed by another hardware processing the information faster than the other could handle, causing throttling. Anyways the r9 390/X or a good gtx 970 would hold. Are you doing 1080p gaming? Then the 970/980/980ti will outperform AMD in all tasks. In higher resolutions. AMD will trump because of higher memory bus and bandwidth.
So anyways in correct terms your current GPU shouldn't be "bottlenecking" your CPU it just stops the full potential form being used.
From your price range, 970 or r9 390/X

As of the pascal being released, the performance increase shouldn't be too much. Like 15-20% at max. Then everyone will be spamming the buy button at home before stocks run out. Lol I did that when i7 6700k came out. I never got one. I'm too lazy to get one now. I have better things to do with my money. But when new Gus come out, there should be a significant decrease in price in the older maxwell Gpus when they get rid of old stock. Best time to steal a new/used one. Used gpus are good too.

Eh, the FX-8350 is pretty dated by now, and even when it came out, it was outperformed by the 3rd gen intel core series. However, so as to not make it look like I'm just bashing AMD, even a 970 or R9 390/390X will perform well under their full potential when paired with an 8350, making the 8350 a bottleneck. As a matter of fact, a GTX 960 4G or R9 380 would likely be a better match for the 8350 in terms of balance.
Since you say you want to carry the GPU over to a new build, what will the new build comprise of? If you snatched up an R9-380X, you'd have an excellent 4GB card that'd fit your price range. The 970 has been shown to be suffering a bit even in 1080p because of its 3.5GB of VRAM and the 390/390x would break your price range by ~$50-$100.

Thanks for your answers guys, I've decided to buy a GTX 960 4GB edition to replace my old Radeon HD 6670 for £122. This card should last me a year at least and probably still sufficient for my future build too.
