Best graphics card upgrade?

Next year I'm going off to college and I'm going to be a computer science major and want to update/overhaul my rig, specifically my graphics card and possibly my cpu. Currently I have a r9 270x and an fx 6350 and I'm not positive of which graphics card would best suit my needs.

I have about $1200 to spend and while I could live with myself if I did spent all of it, I'd rather not. I would consider swapping to an i5 if my current cpu would bottleneck but that would also come out of my $1200.

Other info:
-no I don't want to wait for the r9 300 series cards, I'm moving away from AMD
-I run 2 1080p monitors and sometimes a 3rd display which is just a 720p tv.
-I would like to play newer titled games

Solution
it might be, the 970 will more than likely do you fine, just not 100% sure how it will hold up running multiple monitors while gaming on one, but I would recommend that card as the next one up is almost double the price (980) and you can always add a second one later and sli to improve performance.
I'm just debating if it will be overkill or not, whatever money I save I get to keep and have in my pocket going into college so saving more is better but I'm not positive on the amount of power I'm gonna need for my major (computer science).
