[citation][nom]johnnyseedlings[/nom]Newegg also has 4870s for ~$60 each. Xfire for 120 can't be beat, if you don't mind old tech[/citation]

They're sold out, probably thanks to you. I was considering one, but now I can't. I think you owe me a video card. 😛

Hahaha I'm glad you're also asking this question. I'm thinking to myself, somebody must be really negative. Don't worry, I up-voted you back up to 0. :)

This series has become kind of pointless, and I am beginning to wonder if Toms is just doing it out of some kind of obligation. The recommendations are so generic, as to make the conclusions completely forgone. And the fact that the nVidia and AMD offerings seemed to be tied in each category makes reading the recommendations even more pointless. For example, the best card for the money in the $300 - $400 range: GTX 570 and the Radeon 6970. Without reading the article most readers of this website already know that the major players (AMD and nVidia) each have exactly one card in this category and guess what? It's a tie! Wow, thanks for the great advice. I'm not even tipped off as to what particular manufacturer's card is better. So basically what I learned from this article: go to newegg and search my price range, rule out the overclocked boards that carry a price premium, and then throw a dart.

Please enough with this microstuttering nonsense. If you're above 60 fps you just turn on v-sync and your fine, stuttering gone. If you're much lower than 60 fps, it's not playable anyway and you should reduce quality.

Why was the 6790 included? it had EXACTLY the same specs as the 5770/6770 but with like 40 watts more power consumption... & its $20 more expensive. *facepalm*

You are misinformed.

With a 256-bit memory interface, the 6790 has twice the memory bandwidth of the 128-bit 5770/6770.

Performance is notably inproved, close to the defunct GeForce GTX 460 768MB.

Unfortunately this article doesn't tell me much about a "best card" for the money. Maybe the best platform for a card, but which card from which manufacturer? HIS, Sapphire, EVGA, MSI, Gigabyte, ASUS, others? They all make cards based on 5770 or 6770, so which is the best one?

AMD (namely, this idiot Ruiz) spinned off their fabs, and now has to wait for 3rd-party chipmakers to update their technologies, while Intel eats their lunch.

The THG team and readers alike have been my guide on all of my system builds and I want to thank you for all the great information you have provided to all of us.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

Good to know I bought this VC 6 months ago for my 4 yr old Athlon 5000+ and is recommended by Tom's crew. Now I feel confident to transfer into my next computer that I will try to build myself. Thanks

i don't think so... two 6770's would probably be a closer match a 6870.

[citation][nom]Yargnit[/nom]Where'd you find 2x GTX 560ti's to SLI for $370? That would be more than an honorable mention if it were true. Perhaps you meant 2x GTX 460's?[/citation]
Two 460s SLI are still golden.

i have a 6870, 8 gigs ram, 2500k. the articles says its not worthwhile to upgrade unless the new card is 3 tiers or more higher. would not mean i should just wait until the next generation of cards (hd7000, gtx 600) because the performance gain vs cost ratio would not be in my favor?

Yes they are on par with a 6970 and don't listen to cleeve he is an Nvidiot, Bigot, elitist, whom will always tell people to go with Nvidia/Intel and tell lies to back up his false claims. Here are some facts on the 6770 CFX. http://www.guru3d.com/article/his-radeon-6770-iceqx-turbo-crossfire-review/10
