There are two monitors on the opposite side of the spectrum that you can go with...
If you are a competitive gamer and aim to achieve a monitor that will benefit you the most for the edge over another player in terms of reaction time and fluidity, I recommend going with a 144Hz monitor, but please note!!! ASUS, BenQ, Phillips, and a few others plan to release Nvidia G-Sync monitors in the next coming month or two with monitors that will pair with your GTX card and give you the smoothest experience than any other monitor can offer you, eliminating lag, stutter, tearing, and double frames completely and syncs the monitor refresh rate in harmony with the output of your GPU. If you got $800 to throw, ASUS plans to release a premium G-Sync with a an almighty 1440p resolution at 120Hz+.
On the other side of things because monitors with fast refresh rates use panels that are referred to as "TN" which give you limited viewing angles and poor color production that only use 6bit+dithering to achieve the native color on 8bit IPS panels. IPS is known to give the player a more immersive experience with the lifelike color. I would suggest going with a 1440p IPS monitor. Sure you can go with one of the Korean ones if you are on a tight budget and personally I have the Korean Yamakasi Q270 and love mine, and maybe I got lucky that it was a perfect screen and no flaws, but taking a chance is the only way of knowing. ASUS, Samsung, DELL, and Acer all make 1440p solutions if you decide to go with a real manufacturer. If you have any other concerns please just shoot a question. Hope this explains more and helps you on your future monitor purchase.
