Through reddit, many people were saying the keyboard doesn't matter as much as the mouse and other things. I just have a basic mouse, never had a gaming one. What do look for? All I know is a little about dpi, i don't know how much is optimal/how much is no difference, etc.

What are some suggestions/examples?

Are ergonomic mice good/better for gaming than gaming mice? Are there any ergonomic gaming mice? Is it better to have a wired or wireless mouse for gaming?

If you play competitive matches, then yes having an advantage due to a faster click or actuation is the difference between winning and losing a match. I don't play competitive matches and my multiplayer gameplay is usually casual, relying on campaign based single player games. One misconception is that a gaming mouse should have RGB, LOL, which isn't the case.

OptimumTech have a number of videos on what sort of peripherals to pick up if you're into competitive gaming. If I recall he's also designed a very light weight mouse since that was what was holding him back during his sessions.

To add, you need to understand ergonomics since not everyone's hand is the same shape, nor are people's preferences with clicks and how a mouse's weight which eventually affects the feel of said mouse.

What sort of games do you play or want to play? What sort of a grip style do you game with(claw or palm)? What sort of mouse and keyboard are you currently working with?
