Can someone give me some good ideas for a good NAS array that will be used for video editing? My budget is 400-$500.

I would get it, but make sure, you can return it it does not work....
I hear mix reviews about Drobo... some said good other said slow...

But I have a suggestion...

Why dont you have 2x SSD like evey1 in this post suggest and get a massive...

There are different demand on transfer rate with SD, HD, FinalCut, Premire, Sony Vega...

Of course the HD are more demanding...
For SD any NAS can do 30MB/s that will work
For HD with FC using ProRes then 80MB/s will work...

Note: GbE NIC can be 20MB to 100MB/s depend on your NAS...
2x GbE NIC bondng can be 45 to 200MB/s+

I need to know what you need 1st...

BTW SSD in NAS does not help much for speed

Ok, that answers a lot of questions. I've been video editing for years but am in the process of upgrading to a higher tier in post production.

I use Adobe CC products for everything. I shoot with the Canon 1D C using the Ninja 2 SSD recorder, which records uncompressed 10 bit HD video 220 mb/s. My end products will either be played online or at a major church. I just want to be able to edit video from a NAS over Cat 5.

I'm experienced at networking but new to the NAS type of systems.

Also, what backup strategy do you have in place?

Video editing, esp with adobe products, usually has better results when you have multiple drives so that you are not writing to the same drive you are reading from. Its recommended to also have the OS on a separate drive as well as having a scratch drive.

I second what popatim said about Adobe products. I also edit using the CC products and use three drives. The SSD for the OS and Adobe CC products. A second drive for assets and a third drive that I use for rendering. You might find this - http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/a-beginners-guide-to-advanced-storage/ - a good read. Skip down to the section on "Can a NAS handle serious video editing?".

I have some lacie drives I use to store my footage on. I don't edit or anything on them, they are simply used as a housing for all the footage. I have two of the Big Laci drives. The two both serve as duplicate backups. Speed isn't they key on them.

I actually read that exact same article earlier in the week.

Ideally I would like a NAS setup. But it seems USB 3.0 speeds get around 210-220 mb/s. The USB 3 is nice but I want the capability to pull footage via Cat 5. Is there an ideal system that would be able to meet what I'm looking for?

these will give you a speed that can handle full 1080p and maybe even 4K
