I'm looking at getting a new monitor. I read a couple things saying that Display port is better than HDMI. Is this true? Does display port allow a higher hz for these monitors? I figured they are the same because all these Big screen TV only allow hdmi. A lot a new tv's have 120hz or higher.

If this help. Here's my specs
Intel i5
24 GB Ram
Nivida 960 4GB MSI

Depends. HDMI 2.0 allows for more than 60Hz, but not HDMI 1.4, which is what is on most TV's, unless otherwise specified. But Display Port is still a better option as it is more of a standard, and many monitors will only work as advertised with Display Port (take G-Sync for example) Other monitors can only achieve 144Hz with either dual-DVI or DisplayPort. Or HDMI 2.0 if the GPU and Monitor both support it.

Bottom line, it varies by monitor/tv and your best bet is to look up the timing table. And it also depends on wether or not you want sound, and if you have other options such as free sync or G-sync.

However in general, and in the vast majority of cases, yes, DP is better than HDMI.

Thanks for the quick response. It does seem like more and more monitors are coming with display port. And it's slowly becoming the new standard. I will probally make sure my newer monitor has display port to get the full performance out of it.

Yeah if DP is available that's almost always the best option.

From a pure technical perspective, Displayport max's out at 4K, 144Hz. While HDMI max's out at 4K, 120Hz. At this point in time, you'd need a couple of top end GPU's in SLI to drive that many pixels.
