Best OS for Q9550?

Start -> Run -> MSCONFIG -> Boot -> Advanced options... -> Maximum memory = Checkbox must be unchecked. If that's already the case, check it and set the value to 4096. Should be fine then. The "Memory Remap" BIOS option would immediately solve this, but it seems that, for some reason, your board really lacks the feature. I have found many threads about this problem with this board. Vista x64 runs OK with your config, but Windows XP x64 and Windows 7 x64 don't, apparently.

That was the first thing I looked at but it makes no difference, but thanks for your input.

You, along with most others it seems are using a much later chipset than me.
After doing a fair bit of poking about on the interweb it seems that it may be an issue with either the P35 chipset or the mobo BIOS, either way I'm buggered as Abit have gone the way of the dinosaur and a BIOS update is never going to appear.

Runs fine with P35 chipset. I have Gigabyte EP35-DS3P. If I remember correctly it supports 16GB or at least 8GB. I have 6GB running without issues. Could be down to Your specific motherbnoard. Have you tried updating BIOS?

A BIOS update is not possible due to Abit's demise as far as motherboards are concerned.

has to be setting dude i am able to use my full 4GB of ram. windows 7 would be a good choice if you can't afford an OS right now. you can download win7 for free and it will be good for a year
