Alright fellas I'm hearing all this hype about the Sennhieser HD6xx and the AKG 7xx, but unfortunately those aren't mass produced and frequently available. So what I want to know is, is there a set of headphones around that price point that anyone could recommend?
I'm not a big time audiophile, but if I'm going to invest in a pair I want to get something that will last and that is worth it. I plan on getting a mod mic as well so I can use it for a headset. Please any recommendations will help, thanks!

the massdrop deals will be the best. the prices are about half of what you would pay retail for that headphone.

the k7xx is based on the k702. the hd6xx is based on the hd650.

if you can score them, they are very much worthwhile as to compare something in the price value as the massdrop deal you would be looking at items of a lower quality tier.

for example, the hd6xx was $200 while the hd650 retails at about $350 normally. even the hd600 is about $260. in the sennheiser lineup the option within that price range would be the hd598 which while similar in signature is certainly not at the same level as the hd600 or hd650.

this is not to say there are bad choices within the $200 range. from beyerdynamic the dt770/880/990 are great...

Thanks brotha, I've looked these over, but I was hoping to get some headphones I can wear in public as well if I was gonna pay some premium bucks. If I can't make up my mind I'll probably end up going with those.

Ive got the audio techinia ath-m50x... soundwise they are not top tier, but they make up for it by being having a detachable cabel. Beyerdynamic DT 770 80 ohms is a great pair of headphones if you dont need to carry them around. I used to have them untill i learned my son how to use a wire clipper... 😉

get some other earpads for the m50x, I got the replacement pads for the 840 shure and they fit ok :)

also check out massdrop.com they have some good headphones as well now and then.

i own a m50 myself and the quality is actually quite good though it certainly has flaws. small soundstage, small earcups and not as good of a deal as the dt770 which is overall superior other than needing an amp and not folding.

@tea

you do know you can convert the dt770 to a detachable cable design right? its a DIY project but given the cable was snipped its worthwhile. a little bit of soldering and you're good to go.
