So I was able to come up on a poweredge 2900 that was being thrown out at work. Its only got one CPU in it currently and I'm looking to upgrade that one, as well as add a second. Per what I am seeing on the dell site via the service tag, it currently has a xeon e5405 in it (I have not booted it to confirm what CPU).

Being that its an older server, I imagine the best possible compatible CPU for it would be fairly inexpensive, I just don't know what CPU that would be.

I'm unsure what series my poweredge is, dell doesn't specify on the specs page.

What I'm hoping you guys can help me with is identifying what series my poweredge server is, and identifying the best possible CPU that is compatible with it, I plan on having 2 in the server.

Service tag: H76LBG1
Model: ECM01
Mfg. Date: 05/17/2008

Thanks in advance to whomever is able to help!

Ok I see, I will be hitting google doing some research on what would be the best CPU in that series then.

Any idea what the series/generation of this poweredge is?

I'm also a little bit confused, all documentation on Dell's site shows that the xeon 50xx, 51xx, and 53xx sequence processors are compatible. No mention of the xeon 54xx sequence cpu's.

However the spec sheet for my service tag shows my server has a xeon 5405...? Unless my poweredge is the 3rd gen of its kind, but I'm not entirely sure of this.

Update: I've confirmed this is a poweredge III series. Which does support the xeon 54xx processors. At least this narrows down the list of cpu's to choose from.
