I checked on a PC power calculator and it rated my system at a 432w load, then recommended a 650w PSU. Is this best or could I use a 500w?

Intel I7 3770k 3.5GHz
AMD R9 270x
3770k is around 100W when gaming and overclocked.

Assume 170W when overclocked. 30W for everything else, that leads to around 300W for your system total power consumption.
Assuming the future PSU is from good quality ..

It is not only about the max estimated rating, it is also about (on one side):
  1. Spare head room for future upgrades
  2. The more frequent your power usage near to the psu's max rated capacity, the faster it will brake.
  3. if the psu is running near full capacity, it will be quite warm and the fan will run quite fast..hence it will be loud.
On the other side...you need budget to pay attention to.

I would say, 550W should be ok as long as your system is not running 24/7.
