This is the best 290x there is, only the Tri-X comes second.

No idea why that person is suggesting the 970 against the 290x, if you wanted the 290 *maybe*, but you are asking about the best 290x, that remark was totally out of line.

if it is the vapor-x tri-x and electricity is no issue and u prefer freesync/amd true audio/mantle/tressFX etc go with AMD

if u prefer nvidia game works phsyx shadow play DSR Gsync FXAA(im not a fan of anything other than SSAA or MSAA

the only reason i would go for the R9 290X is the 4GB of Vram instead of the chance of sttuter with the 3.5GB

I might want to wait for the R9 300 series to see what AMD has to offer.

R9 290<GTX970<R9 290x<GTX 980

And that is a wise choice, the new AMD Cards are a couple months away, so is the desktop version of the GM200 from Nvidia, rumored to be the same as Titan X with 6GB.

Watch this: http://www.redgamingtech.com/r9-390x-features-8gb-hmb-8-2tflops-performance-gtx-980-rumored-specs/
Probably the specs. Looks like the Fiji XT ( R9 390X ) Is better, but we don't know if these benchmarks are true. Man I can't wait.

You solved it sherlock. R9 290x outperforms GTX 970 in 4k, 2k, etc. GTX 970 outperforms the R9 290X by a A LOT In 1080p. R9 290X has a good feature though, it can toast toasts.

From all the reviews I've read/seen over the past couple months which is a lot... most people seem to like the Sapphire Tri-X best (although I think it's rather ugly looking, but whatever).

Nice to see the MSI actually put a backplate on their 290X Lightning. I was disappointed to see MSI didn't bother with that on their GTX 970. IMO, all $300 cards should have a backplate and I won't buy one that doesn't.

The only 290X card I've heard terrible reviews on is... ASUS. Which I hated to hear because I'm a loyal ASUS owner, but there's a bunch of reviews from certain Techies I highly respect who say ASUS did something terribly wrong with their cooler on that card. All 290x's get hot, but they say ASUS's version is the biggest toaster oven of all.
