Hi, I'm looking into maximizing my somewhat dated ASRock X58 mobo which supports the 1366 cpu. I have a low end first gen i7 the 920 overclocked to 3.6ghz and I'm not really interested in upgrading that, but my ram is x3 2gb (6gb) and it runs at a measly 555mhz. Would upgrading to newer ddr4 ram be of great benefit for me? I'd like to get 3x 12gb or 2x16 ideally... but also will my mobo even support the newer ram? I'm not really sure where to find this out... been googling for a bit. I'm also thinking of getting a solid state drive and I've already ordered a newer graphics card. It is a pci-3 card and my mobo only supports up to pci 2.0 but I read that this won't really make much of a difference. Is that correct? anyways, Thanks

1. Your motherboard does not support DDR4 RAM, only DDR3. Your RAM is configuered at a very odd speed though. Was it set this way as part of your over clocking efforts? You should be able to run it at least at 1333 (667MHz).
2. You are correct in saying that you will not notice much difference with your graphics in PCIe 2.0 mode as opposed to PCIe 3.0 mode.

You can't use DDR4 memory, your memory is running Triple Channel so the actual speed is X3 what you listed.
Buy you a set of 3X4gb for a total of 12 if that's what you wish to upgrade to (your motherboards web site will list memory they have tested it with)
A 3.0 card will work in a 2.0 slot.
A SSD will be a breath of fresh air your PC.

im not sure if i should start a new thread or not to ask this but i did more research on ram and now im a bit more lost. ive now been looking into the best ddr3 i can get for my x58 motherboard and it seems the 1666 is the highest i can support...but...ive also now discovered voltage is a factor of some concern especially if overclocking is involved... so im not sure what to do. i got this rig pre installed with 3x 2gb sticks and i can only assume they match whatever my cpu is clocked to. i do lots of music production so more ram is definitely going to be better performance i assume... im just worried about matching up the voltage with how my cpu is overclocked and ensure that adding a bit faster ram with more gigs ( want to get 12gb 3x 4gb sticks) will be both an upgrade and still maintain stability. this system has been stable for the 4-5 years ive had it and i obviously dont want to screw it up adding what i would hope would be an upgrade. am i better off just saying if it aint broke dont fix it and stick with my current dated 6gb? thanks for any suggestions, didnt realize upgrading ram can be so complicated.

i currently have corsair ddr3 pc3-10700h (667 mhz) 2gb chips. would this be a good buy? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Crucial-ECC-Server-RAM-12GB-Kit-3x4GB-1600MHz-DDR3L-PC3-12800-CT3KIT51272BD160B-/301795077260?hash=item4644636c8c:g:S4QAAOSwFnFV~Pj8 i also saw some of those ripjaws at a faster speed (1600) for cheaper too there http://www.ebay.com/itm/G-SKILL-Ripjaws-Series-12GB-3-x-4GB-240-Pin-DDR3-SDRAM-DDR3-1600-PC3-12800-D-/381043287002?hash=item58b7f323da:g:mVUAAOxyVVJSA-UJ I guess i'd go for either of those if they are the best my x58 board can support. so is it safe to upgrade from my old ram? theres no voltage to concern myself with or anything? I just read a bunch on ram that made me wonder if its a good idea or not to upgrade. obviously the speed is alot faster so i would think it would help (in addition to double the capacity)
