Hello,

What is the current best solution for creating a dependable (won’t unexpectedly die) BOOTABLE MacOS hard drive?

Usage will be normal... daily to a few times a week... mostly text, surfing web, occasional graphics/photo, occasional Logic Pro (audio recording)... but not heavy or power-hungry use... no constant video editing, etc.

(I will buy 2... 1 as my main, and 1 as backup.)

(HDD... unless you highly recommend an SSD.)

With SSD, I need at least 1TB. With HDD I can get 2-6TB for very good prices. I don’t need to be cheap, but I also don’t have a fortune.

Need to boot MacOS (Apple).

Speed is not an issue. Reliability/disk death is more important.

WESTERN DIGITAL? Or other brand? (I’ve had Seagate and they always DIE.)

Some options I am researching...

(A)
WD Gold Enterprise Class HDD? (X 2, plus external USB enclosure)

(I build my own.)

(B)
WD Elements or Passport HDD? (X 2)

(These are cheaper and easier, but quality seems lower? However, I will buy 2 as backup.)

(C)
WD G-Technology HDD? (X 2)

(These seem easier, but very pricey.)

(D)
SSD? Which brand/model do you recommend for reliability (no death).

(E)
Other? What do you recommend?

Since everything is crossed off except A ... then Congratulations!

Most of us here recommend an SSD unless you need ore then 1TB of space. SSD's get too expensive above 1Tb.

(I don’t know why the other options were “strike/cross out” text formatted. I corrected the text.)

I would prefer more space... 2TB to 6TB.

But if SSD is super-reliable... I could be convinced to get a 1TB SSD.

Speed is not an issue. Reliability/disk death is more important.

What options do you recommend?

What brand/model of SSD do you recommend?
