best usb 3.0 hub?

No hub can maintain the full bandwidth over all the output ports at once. The total bandwidth of the hub can't be more than it's input port can provide but that gets split among all the outputs in use. Is a PCIe add-on card an option (or is it a laptop)?

Remember that, if you intend to use the hub to support (say) external disks, then you should use a powered hub as most peripheral flash disks and external disks need about 3v to power them and one usb port only gives you 3v so using a 3 port unpowered usb hub will only give you 1v on each port.

a PCIe addon card is an option, but I'd rather not have to go to the back of my PC to plug in my USB stick. I will be using it mainly for the USB stick and i'll be plugging it in and out many times. that's why i'd rather it be external. If I only plug in one USB stick, will it be as fast as plugging it in directly into the USB 3.0 port on the back of the PC?

Isn't that just a myth? :) do people really do that? I never see anyone do that.

It doesn't sound like you need so many ports, and you might be able to save a bit on a smaller unit. Many of the reviews I quickly scanned just used that as a phone/tablet charging station.

my old usb key actually did get corrupt, but it got corrupt while using it. i was editing a photo and all of a sudden photoshop froze. then I couldn't access my usb key anymore. when i went to access it, it said it had to format it. so I guess all the in/out I did without unmounting it took its toll?

If the system happens to be writing to that drive at that moment, or just doing some clean up....poof. Corruption.

It does come down to what the PC is doing with the drive at the moment it's unplugged. Nothing catastrophic should happen if the drive was idle but if it's not it's like USAFRet said. If there's important stuff on the drive, it's better to be safe than sorry.

what if you shutdown your PC when the USB stick is still in the PC? can it get corrupt like that? or does shutting it down automatically unmounts the stick?

Shutting down the PC normally is no problem. It does what it needs to do before final shutdown.
