Currently using a GTX 780 and thinking about an upgrade, don't have a huge budget so proper high end is off the table unfortunately. I've looked at the RX480 but I've heard it has heat problems and can fry your PCIE slot? Thanks

Short answer is it will scale better with resolution. That means, if you ever decide to go into 1440p (2560x1440) or above, then the extra memory will help the 6GB to have more stuff as in textures and extra triangles (simplification, lol). Plus, the 6GB is a tad better chip wise. For some stupid reason nVidia decided to call 2 different chips under the same consumer name.

If you have the extra money, then by all means go for the 1060 6GB. If you want a compromise, then the RX480 4GB (if you can find one with a decent cooler) is not a bad choice at all.

EDIT: A friend just got this one and it's one capable...
If your target is *only* 1080p with no increase, then the best possible value you have now is the 1060 3GB with the RX470 4GB in close second (both at ~200-ish).

After that, you jump into the RX480 4GB (~220-ish) and then to the 1060 6GB (~250-ish).

Here is a list from Newegg:

RX470 4GB (~200): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125896&cm_re=rx_470_4gb-_-14-125-896-_-Product
RX480 4GB (~240): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150775&cm_re=rx_480_4gb-_-14-150-775-_-Product
1060 3GB (~210): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125906&cm_re=1060_3gb-_-14-125-906-_-Product
1060 6GB (~290 !): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125881&cm_re=1060_6gb-_-14-125-881-_-Product

Cheers!

Would you say the extra 3gb is worth the £40 on the 1060? Not entirely sure about what the extra memory does :')

I have this RX480.

Cheers!

Just look on Youtube pretty much. This video seems to do the job pretty well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9emI9RSxxY

There seems to be a 5-7fps difference in both Fallout 4 and GTA V. Just ask yourself if it's worth the 80 dollars.
This is at 1080P though, so at let's say 2K the difference would increase even though you can't hit that 60fps mark with such a card anyway using high settings graphics.
