So I have a Samsung Evo 850 that I would like to hook up to my Mobo which only has SATA 2. I do have several PCIE 2.0 x4, x8 and one x16 slots open though. Is it possible to hook up the SSD to one of these slots (somehow?) for improved performance?

I realize I/O performance is relatively unaffected by SATA 2 vs SATA 3. But I would still like to get the full performance out of these drives if possible.

The easy and best way to connect the SSD will just plug the SSD into the SATAII ports, like you said the performance is relatively unaffected by SATA 2 vs SATA 3.

If you use the pcie slot, you will have to buy the good add-on pcie2.0 x4 card, which is not cheaper. Don't buy the the cheaper pcie x1 add-on card, the MB may or may not recognize it ( the add-on card + SSD), and you will get lower performances too.
