Best way to sell Epic item?

Had a great weekend moneywise. As background, I'd worked up to about
100g total between my 53 Paladin and 6 Mage (auction house mule)
through questing and auctioning off green and the rare blue items my
Paladin found.

On Saturday I saw on the Ironforge trade channel someone offering the
Epic-class Axe of the Deep Woods
(<URL:http://wow.allakhazam.com/item.html?witem=811>) for 90g. I took
the risk of spending almost all my money because I knew there was a
good chance I could sell it for much more. And indeed, I made a profit
of more than 50g through auction.

Later on Saturday, I finally found my first Epic-class random world
drop, the Warden Staff
(<URL:http://wow.allakhazam.com/item.html?witem=943>), from an undead
in Sorrow Hill in the Western Plaguelands. Time to celebrate! But, now
I'm wondering what's the best way to sell it.

I put the Axe of the Deep Woods on sale late Saturday because,
frankly, I needed the money back fast. That said, I normally put up
items for auctions on Friday evenings as Saturday mornings are the
busiest times for the game. The rule of thumb I've heard about
auctions is that green items should get a buyout (I generally do 150%
of the initial bid), but that blue items shouldn't in order to let the
price run up. I wonder, though, if purple items should again get some
buyout, if a ridiculously-high one, so the level 60 player with more
money than he knows what to do with and needing a weapon fast before
going raiding in Molten Core or Stratholme or Scholomance can get it
immediately. So, I wonder: When I put the Warden Staff for sale on
auction Friday (assuming I don't sell it on the trade channel ahead of
time), should I put in a buyout? If so, how much? Another Warden Staff
was on auction for 800g minimum bid and 1100g buyout, but that's
hardly a realistic benchmark to use.

With the explosion of lvl 60 toons levelling up Engineering for BG,
there's plenty of buyers to snare. I just put up a several stacks of
copper bars for 2g buyout...and I was on the lower end. Wool cloth
stacks are going for 1g, too. The introduction of BG has made
enterprising low level characters very, very rich.

Put your minimum bid price at what you think is a realistic amount, then
double it for the buyout. Not scientific, but sounds reasonable to me, con-
sidering your buyout amount is only intended to be there to snare people
with more money than sense.

Well, I've never sold an Epic (so I hope to learn from this thread!) but
my key with sales using a mule is fast turnover, not getting the maximum
price for each item. In fact I quite like the fact that I can make a
profit by selling at an affordable price and often do deals with toons
who /w me.

The reason for this is that you're in WoW to play the game, not deal on
the AH so you don't want to be spending time advertising in the trade
channel (which does work) and relisting unsold items - my tactic is to
make your price attractive enough to sell the item for you. And to be
nice to ppl who may one day save your ass 😉 I've only put minimal
effort into sales and made 150G in about 2 weeks (IRL) with my 34 Hunter
and mule.

Good luck with the Staff

I forgot to say - in my strategy the buyout price is realistic, since
that's what I want *everyone* to use. I know it pisses me off when I'm
in the AH and something I want isn't available NOW!

You want to spend 99% of your time playing your active toon, and when
you log onto your mule have a mailbox full of money, not unsold returns.

I know potions and the ingredients for the same have skyrocketed on my
server, especially the swiftness ones. *sniff* and here I gave up
herbalsim for enchanting!

Just curious - why is wool at a premium now? Bandages are actually worth
something? I have stacks of them in my bank bags, should I go put them
up?

Wool has been at a premium for a while on my server. I have no idea
why. I presume it is the lower levels trying to control the market, as
to them its a common drop and needed for many professions early on.

As a level 47 i havent seen any Wool Cloth for ages 🙂

I assume it is that there are so few wool level players compared to much
higher level wool consumers. High level its easier to keep levelling and
farming coin to buy wool than to be bored farming wool.

Sure makes it easy to save up for a mount for us altaholics..

You can now turn in wool, silk, mageweave and runecloth for rep and xp at
the capitol cities or at least IF. I'm pretty sure the patch notes mentioned
SW as well. At lvl 50 Mageweave brought me 3900xp the others are not worth
mentioning but it's an easy way to get rep in your city and ditch some
useless cloth.

The new clothmasters accept wool. You need to turn in 60 of each type of
cloth before you can bring runecloth, something you drown in at 60. For
reputation gain.

it depends on the Level, assuming that somebody is working hard for his
gold, at lvl40 around he does not have that much to spend.

Your item is lvl 43, so it is a phase where the player bought the
mount and is levelling by one every day if he is a frequent player
and is making 1-10 G a day.

I would have mercy with beginners and put it in for 55G buyout,
I think that´s the maximum a lvl43 can come up with.

You could also target the lvl60 guys and ask for 150G buyout. It´s
up to you.

I don't play a Druid myself, but from what I read at Allakhazam and
Thottbot the Warden Staff is an endgame (or nearly so) weapon for dire
bear-form Druids due to the armor bonus multiplier they get.

If I don't sell it on the trade channel before the weekend, I will try
a 200g initial bid and 400g buyout.

If you were on Argent Dawn (EU), I'd bite your arm off for that at 150 gold,
nevermind 55g! You'll be fighting off Druids for it 🙂

that is because you could rise your acceptance (?) in some major cities
now by donating wool and other things. Wool is the start.

But after hearing what it CAN go for i was /cry

Useless? Hah. Screw rep, it's much more valuable to sell at the AH. I've made
dozens and dozens of gold selling silk, mageweave and runecloth, both plain
cloth and bolts that my tailor makes out of them.

Yes, I was just about to throw that in myself - while the Warden Staff
has a level req of 43, it is by no means an item that a level 43 player
will get and then replace in his 50's. It IS considered an endgame
weapon for feral Druids, and you should price it as such.

Cheers!

The Gnome cloth handin NPC is in Tinker Town, and the Dwarf NPC is standing
next to the tailor shop in the Great Forge area.

I've heard that the Human cloth NPC is at the tailor shop in the Mage
Quarter in Stormwind, and I assume that the Night Elf guy is at a tailor
shop somewhere in Darnassus.

Correct on both counts. The human quartermaster is upstairs in the
Tailor Shop (the first one you see when you enter the Mage Quarter, not
the one at the back), so he's easy to miss.

The elf is just standing right next to all the trainers.

Cheers!
