I like the ASUS routers the best for home use. Which one you get depends on what your client devices can do. You can get a nice AC router but if your devices can only do wireless N then all the AC capabilities can't be used. Also are you planning to wire the HTPC to the router and then use wireless from there or were you going to try to make the HTPC wireless?
'Best router' depends a lot on your environment. Where's the router, where's the PC, where's all the other devices, what type of service do you have....
All that needs to be looked at. There is no one best.
Right now the HTPC uses WD livewire power AC adapters 200M. I may go wireless if perf is better. Environments change, but right now looking for performance of 28Mbps cable.
Well if performance is what you are after then you need to be using the wifi AC standard. And to gain the maximum benefit you need to have a matching AC client. Today most devices do not have AC clients. So to add one you more likely will need to use a Bridge. For the best performance look at using 2 matching AC1750 routers or higher. As example in NETGEAR's line up would be the R6300 1750AC or the R7000 1900AC. Both can be configured in bridge mode. You will get gigabit speeds through this method assuming that range and interference is in the norms.
