Better PSU = No coil whine?

Hi guys, I need help. I had a gtx 970 strix 1 week ago, I did an RMA because there was too much coil whine, it was unstandable... I changed it for a MSI r9 390, and it whines as well, maybe not as much as the previous card but it is annoying. My PSU is a cx750m, I discovered it is the cheap series of corsair's PSUs. The point is: I read that some people defeated coil whine by changing psu to an RM750i, EVEN if the whine was coming from their GPUs, so I would like to try. What do you think? can I have a techincal explanation of this thing? Will buying a better PSU help or it will be a waste of money?

its a possibility that a new PSU will help, Coil whine can be cause by a lack of power from the PSU, both the CX and RM series from Corsair are not designed for gaming if you want a Corsair PSU then get either the AX/AXI series as these are fantastic, for your setup with either the R9 390 or GTX 970 you shouldn't need more than a good 650W I personally have an R9 290x which is pretty much the same as the R9 390 and I run this and my overclocked Skylake setup off an EVGA G2 650W power supply and it works fantastically, for sugestions you could get what I have or anything from XFX or SeaSonic are very high quality units, also the G" and P" PSU's from EVGA are very good too and as I said 650W + for you is best :)

1) The RM750i is an excellent gaming unit. Not on par with Leadex or XP2/XP3 platform units, but still very good.
2) Coil whine is NOT caused by a lack of power (shutdowns are)
3) Better quality PSUs can indeed help with coil whine, since they can handle larger changes in load without dropping voltage. Some places test transient loading (suddenly adding ~80W for milliseconds), and ones that handle loads like that with little to no impact on voltage are going to be better than others.

oh RMi series, didn't see the I at the end sorry xD the RM series is bad but the RMi series is a tier 1 PSU so you should be more than ok with that PSU, Good luck!

I can confirm that upgrading my power supply helped my coil whine significantly. I was running a CX750W power supply I bought before I knew better on my first build.

It was fine on my old Radeon 7850 but when I upgraded to 2 GTX 970s in SLI I had terrible coil whine. It was especially annoying in games like CS:GO where I get extremely high framerates.

I have since upgraded to an EVGA Supernova G2 Gold certified 850W power supply and my coil whine is gone. I was going to go with another 750W supply but on the day of my purchase the 850W model was on sale for practically the same price so I went with that instead.

For a single GTX 970 you could probably save a bit of money and go with a 600W PSU unless you plan to SLI in the future.
