Specs:

Motherboard: Z97X Gaming 3
CPU: i5 4670K @ 4.4
RAM: 2x 4GB Ballistix Crucial @ 1600
PSU: Corsair CX600
Graphics: R9 280x Tri-X Vapor-X OC

Hi there,

Recently I've added 2 new RAM sticks but this prevented me from booting off USB to install new system, even though I removed the 2 extra RAM sticks I couldn't boot (it would get stuck at BIOS Splash screen), without an option to do anything apart from restarting the computer. The USB would boot fine if I removed the extra RAM before.

So I decided to reset CMOS, I went and taken out the battery, rebooted, it asked if I want to load default so yeah I did, I went into the BIOS and turned off on-board graphics (I thought the USB boot issue is due to insufficient power, perhaps the USB draws too much power). I rebooted the PC and that's it, freeze at gigabyte splash screen (this is where it asks to press DEL, F12 etc but doesn't actually register any of the input except numlock/capslock/screenlock (it also has slight delay when I press these buttons).

Usually when I had the BIOS splash screen freeze I'd take out the extra RAM and it would boot fine but now it doesn't even boot in any combination, even 1 RAM stick doesn't do the job.

I've tested different PSU, hard drive, disconnected DVD, used only 1 RAM stick in every slot available, re-seated the CPU.

Could this be due to both BIOS being corrupted?

They told me my warranty is now past (I thought it's 3 years but apparently not). I searched for new mobos but it's hard to get anything for socket LGA1150 and if there's any it's around £240...

Solution

No its actually what i was going to suggest also... so i deleted my last post and thought of adding it to my previous post...
Seriously speaking, I see every other post with Gigabyte motherboard having issues with ram or other things... I was also a victim of two Gigabyte boards and moreover they will deny warranty whatsoever... GIGABYTE boards should be avoided i guess...
Anyways on to your problem, i think its your motherboard or the RAM's... But i hardly doubt it...
My conclusion: Its your Motherboard...

I too think it's motherboard, I hope it is really.

Is there anything that can be done if both BIOS's are corrupted which I think this might be the case?

Also, if I must replace it which I think I'll have to, could you perhaps recommend alternative motherboard for a decent price? My budget is around £150, I don't have to overclock my CPU again but from what I can see there are very few alternatives still being sold for the LGA1150 socket...

Dont worry much, if you dont wanna overclock get the cheapest you find of that generation., doesnt affect performance; by cheapest, i mean the cheapest you could get. If you wanna overclock get the z97 within your budget. Do stay away from gigabyte...
