So i got a new motherboard since my old one failed, and now and time the computer makes it to the BIOS page, the power simply goes out and then it will restart back up and continue to repeat. Any one have ideas?

thanks so much!

I'm assuming you mean the POST,not the BIOS. Either way it would seem the issue is with your installation of windows (I'm assuming you run Windows). Did you just swap out the board or did you also do processor and ram? Did you re-install windows before changing parts?

First thing i'd try is a windows repair, then a linux live CD, and if that boots, reinstall windows, if it doesn't, RMA the board.

Are you getting any beep codes before it reboots? Did you clean the old thermal paste, and reapply new?

Try Breadboxing your PC: Pull the MB, HDD's, Vid, DVDrom, RAM, and PSU out of the case. Set the board on the motherboard box, connect the PSU to the bare motherboard (with CPU), and use a screwdriver to jump the power pins on the board. Did it beep? If so, power down, and connect the vid, and power up again, did it beep and display? If so, power down and insert the RAM, power back up, did you get a beep, and/or a display stating no boot device connected? If so, power down, and connect the HDD, power up, did it go to windows? If so, power down and connect the DVD, then boot back up, did it get to windows again? if so, you have a grounding issue within your case.

Basically this is a process of elimination. If it doesen't beep with just the MB, and CPU attached to the PSU, then the PSU is bad.

I'd double check your PSU to make sure the plugs are secure in the motherboard, as well as every other component plugged into the mobo.

Try removing all RAM sticks except for one, with that one being in slot 0. Also, instead of letting the PC boot as far as possible, try going into the BIOS and see if the PC still shuts down. You don't have to do anything, just see how long it can stay on.

Let us know how it goes.

It could be hardware issue: timings are not set properly => solution: reset CMOS (use the jumper on the motherboard), boot, go into BIOS settings, Load default and save, READY

If it is a Windows issue: because you changed your hardware, Windows will lock up => solution: either reinstall Windows on top (will need to erase everything), OR boot from Windows Install CD and try to do a Repair

hey guys thanks all SO much for the replies!!! this was my first time building a computer ever and the forums on here were beyond my expectations! i will definitely be referring all of my friends here. Turns out that the cpu cooler was not correctly snapped in on one side, causing the chip to turn off due to its heat limit reached so quickly. I reattached the cooler and now everything is working wonderfully!

thanks again!!

Ahh, well that'll do it, lol. Glad you fixed it though! The first build is usually the hardest (usually...hah), but it's good experience! I remember my first build, took me about 2 days to get everything operational. Now, unless there are DOA's, I can get one fully built in < 20 minutes.

Welcome to Tom's as well! Hopefully you'll stick around 😀
