They couldn't have made all the thousands of choices you made thoughout the game somehow affect the ending. When they said that "decisions in Mass Effect 2 will have dire consequences in Mass Effect 3", they didn't mean the last 5 minutes, but sometime throughout the game itself.

They tried to do something different, rather than create an ending that catered to the mindless instant gratification society that we currently live in. People today don't want to do anything that requires any serious train of thought. Anything that does, they write off as bad writing.

Still, if I spent 9 years of my life creating a trilogy (Mass Effect started as Project SFX in 2003), and the fans acted the way they did, damn right, I'd be upset too. It'd be like insulting someone's work.
