Black borders resolution

Any time i play a game and lower my resolution i get black borders around my screen only game where this doesn't happen is shadow or morder was hoping there is a solution. My native resolution is 1080p monitor is a Dell S2440L connected by HDMI. GPU is a Sapphire 7850 2GB OS is windows 7. Also i tried changing the scaling in Catalyst control center still no solution.

seems to not be working. If i try and change my resolution from 1080p to 900p in games like witcher 2 and skyrim i just get black borders all around my screen

That is because your Monitor's native Resolution is probably 900p. What kind of monitor do you have and what size is it in inches?

monitor is a Dell S2440L 24 inches connected by HDMI my native resolution is 1920x1080. For some reason when i change my resolution in shadow of mordor i don't have this problem but in all of my other games i do.

Settings in game could be what's wrong so mess around with some of those and see what you come up with, but the problem could be HDMI some games don't work well with HDMI so they are scaled down while using HDMI. I would recommend switching to DVI or Display Port connection if possible the problem probably won't occur anymore once you have switched.

apparently I don't have a DVI cord only a VGA and since my monitor can only use HDMI or VGA I need a DVI-VGA cord to use for my GPU
