News Black Friday Gaming PC: Build a 1440p Desktop for Under $700

That is a pretty good combo for the price. AM4 and RDNA2 are real bargains for the moment.

A novel build for less would be the Asrock Deskmeet ITX B660+A380 case/mobo/gpu/psu combo( ASRock DESKMEET B660 Intel 12th Gen Mini PC Barebone + ASRock Challenger Arc A380 6GB GDDR6 PCI Express 4.0 ITX Video Card A380 CLI 6G OC (newegg.com) ) for $299.98+12100f for $97.99 ( Intel Core i3-12100F - Core i3 12th Gen Alder Lake Quad-Core 3.3 GHz LGA 1700 58W Desktop Processor - BX8071512100F - Newegg.com ) + a 1TB Team sata for $47.99 ( Amazon.com: TEAMGROUP AX2 2TB 2 Pack 3D NAND TLC 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal Solid State Drive SSD (Read Speed 550 MB/s) Compatible with Laptop & PC Desktop T253A3002T0C1P1 : Electronics ) + same ram as article for $47 = a lower end, but not terrible compact ITX for $492.96.

This would be more of a mostly 1080p build though. Some games are good at 1440, but they are the occasional ones.

What a dumb article... $700 for 50-60 fps at 1440p... Whats the point. Might as well stay at 1080p atleast then you'll get over 60 fps. How is an "editor in chief" recommending 1440p at such low fps.. it's like the old 4k scam back when it costed thousands to get above 60fps let alone a 4k display that would even go above 60hz

But as we know from the "How much CPU does the 3080 really need" article, a 3080 even with a relatively antique 4770k from 2013 paired with a card the power of the RTX 3080, which is currently on sale for $699.99 on Newegg, is capable of 4k75 gaming and 2560x1440@120 gaming, so there is no need to upgrade your entire system.

... Whats the point. ...

60 fps at 1440p on ultra settings, for such a price that seems hardly something to complain about. Not everyone plays the fastest-pace games, nor does only play games for that matter. So, someone who plays e.g. Detroit: Become Human and CivVI, and watches videos, they'd get to enjoy a solid 1440p with such a rig (and possibly more than 60 fps on games less demanding than the games benchmarked).

Of course though, for some 60 fps is not good enough, and even if 60 fps is considered alright, for some of the 2023 game releases, one may end up lowering the graphic settings in game to still get 60 fps. But for many a casual gamer, there still is quite some value with such a setup - and the article answers the questions of "Which GPU to get for 1440p gaming, as the bare minimum?".
