I have had this problem for a couple of days now and i can't seem to figure out what is wrong. Windows 8.1 will boot up and it will show my computer manufacturers logo and go to a black screen. Sometimes is will load up some sort of repair thing where it gives me a list of things i could do to repair my laptop. I've tried most of them with little success. I tried using Command prompt but it says that it found all of the corrupt files and fixed them but, it still does the same thing. It will sometimes boot up and stay at my manufactures logo and it will give me a blue screen saying " Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart" Booting into safe mode doesn't work. Does anybody have a clue to why my computer is doing this? It was working fine the day before this was happening.

Does your mouse show up on the screen when it turns black? Are you running a desktop or laptop, and what make/model is it? Did you install any hardware or software or change any settings leading up to this issue?

I am running a Acer Aspire E1-521-0851. The last thing i installed on it was TF2. I left my computer in sleep mode when i went to bed and it installed some updates when it was in sleep mode i think. Because, my computer was off when i woke up.

If you can, boot up to a Windows Recovery Environment (your installation CD). Your laptop should have a recovery partition that should do the same thing. When you get there, enter you language and whatnot and hit next. At the bottom left should be a "Repair your computer" option, click that and attempt startup recovery. If that doesn't work then select Advanced Recovery options and head over to the command prompt. Run SFC on your offline Windows directory. The command will be something like "sfc /OFFBOOTDIR=X:\ /OFFWINDIR=X:\windows" where X is the drive letter of your windows OS - it usually is D in the WinRE. After that, run "chkdsk /F" and reboot.

I'll have to try and find the box that my laptop came with. Do you know of any kind of software that can help my computer get back to normal, if i can't find my recovery disk?

You need some sort of WinRE (Windows Recovery Enviroment), without that I'm not sure what else you could do. I know there are sources out there to download a copy of Windows in an ISO format, then burn that onto a disc - but I can not condone that nor tell you to proceed down that path.

I looked everywhere and i couldn't find any of the CD's that came with my laptop. I don't know what to do at this point. I am going on a vacation with my family within a couple of days and i would like to have this laptop working before i leave.

I couldn't find an ISO of Windows 8.1 but i found a ISO of WIndows 8. I burnt it to my USB using Rufus. changed my bios to the legacy Bios because it wouldn't show my USB when i would load Boot setup on startup. I booted into my USB, it showed the windows 8 logo and loaded and gave me a black screen for a minute then returned me to my startup screen.

I made a recovery drive and i inserted it into my USB port and was going to reset my pc because it needed a installation media thing. It loaded and gave me options to either keep all my files or remove all my files and when i clicked on the remove all my files, it loaded to the "Acer Explore beyond Limits" startup logo screen. It loaded for about 10 minutes than gave me an error saying "There was a problem resetting your PC.
