I have a computer that will not load into windows xp, just gives me a black screen. I can load into ubuntu and therefore have access to the system32 files and that, but CANNOT boot from usb, for some reason, ever since ubuntu installation i cannot do it. I also have a windows xp installation cd, but still cannot boot. The same cd has worked on other computers.

Hello.

Please start from the start. Did the computer just stop booting one day? Then you installed Ubuntu to check your files?
If you installed Ubuntu on top of windows, you might have damaged your bootloader, rendering windows unable to start.

As for the CD of winXP, why doesn't it boot? Is the CD-ROM the first in the boot sequence of the bios? If not, change it to the first and retart the PC. Then press a key when it asks for "boot from cd"

I tried updating it to windows 7, it got halfway and then cancled becuase my computer wasnt compatible. I figured out that it moved the windows xp files into windows.old and i restored it, but still doesnt work. My usb booted perfectly for the ubuntu one but doesnt boot at all once i had finally installed ubuntu. I made sure it was the correct one selected in the BIOS, still doesnt work.

Okay. For starters, you cannot simply restore windows.old. Once it is moved to that folder, you have to use windows 7 to go back to XP. Copying the files and all will never work well. (it's possible, but quite a hassle) If your windows 7 install failed...you need to re-install windows XP completely at that point.

As for the USB boot key, have you tried re-doing it again? You will need a program such as Rufus to correctly make a Windows XP or later bootable USB.

As for the CD, does your CD-ROM drive work? Many old XP era CDROM drives are broken. I suggest you try using a USB drive, or buy another DVD drive.

I just tried the usb, still doesnt work. I used the "dd" command in linux (my other computer) to burn to usb. Worked fine before. Thx for the advice with the "re-install windows xp". Will work on booting usb.
