Question Black Screen on a new build (Please help. I am a beginner here)

Hi Everyone,

Issue - After gaming (Destiny 2) for 2-15 minutes I see a black screen. PC does restart again but a black screen exists. I have to
force a shutdown through the power button. PC does run smoothly otherwise while browsing and watching YouTube and OTT. (Havent installed other software or games to use as I ran into the black screen on Destiny 2 for testing)

Build my first PC 2 days ago. I stress-tested GPU, CPU, and RAM through Furmark and Memtest86. All tests were completed successfully (0 errors).
All drivers are updated, and BIOS Updated as well.
Checked my event log for errors and found out below critical errors just when the system blackout -

System Log -
1) Error - Event 162, volmgr - Dump file generation succeded.
2) Critical - Event 41, Kernel-Power - The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
3) Error - Event 1001, BugCheck - The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000003b (0x00000000c0000005, 0xfffff80372c69be0, 0xffff960d018dd580, 0x0000000000000000). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\022525-8812-01.dmp. Report Id: 41ec73eb-fed2-4f3b-95e3-f89308a7efc5.
4) Error - Event 6008, EventLog - The previous system shutdown at 1:49:46 AM on ‎2/‎25/‎2025 was unexpected.

Please let me know which log report will help to resolve this issue and thank you so much in advance for the help :)

I got a similar problem a few weeks ago after I installed a new 64 GB (2x32 GB) RAM kit. I mistakenly bought a kit optimized for XMP but I'm using it in a AM5 system. XMP runs at 1.35v while expo generally works at 1.4v. I changed the voltage to 1.4 and the problem never happened again. Do you have expo enabled? If yes what is the RAM voltage?

If it's not the RAM, it could be a simple bug with the AMD driver and Destiny 2. You should try other games to see if it only happens for one game.

You said all the drivers are up to date, but did you also install the chipset driver? A BIOS update could also help to improve stability. And what about your temperatures (GPU and CPU)?

Hi Jay,
I have updated the BIOS just now.
Expo - Disabled
RAM Voltage - 1.1

Should I change the RAM voltage to 1.4?

At default settings it's normal that the DRAM voltage is low since it sets the RAM to low frequency. Enable expo and check what the voltage is. If it gets set to 1.35v then you likely have a XMP kit. If it's the case just change it to 1.4v.

I enabled the Expo, voltage was set to 1.35v. As suggested I changed it to 1.4v. System does not boot now. Yellow and Red light on motherboard.

Tried to reset the CMOS but still system does not boot.

What should I do now?

Resetting the CMOS should put back all the settings to default and disable expo. Are you sure you did it properly? Turn off the PSU, remove the battery and try to short the (battery)connectors with a screw driver for a few seconds.

Any DDR5 RAM sticks can be safely run at 1.4, it's not even close to their limit. However, when you change settings like this the boards might have to train for a few minutes before booting. If it really doesn't boot after CMOS reset, make sure all the power cables are well plugged in to the motherboard, try to remove one of the ram sticks and power on the computer. If it does the same, switch with the other stick.

I would be extremely surprised if setting the voltage to 1.4v broke something. Like I said it's well within the safe range.

Hi,

1. CMOS reset succesful.
2. Boot with 1 RAM stick. Played the game for 1 hr. No black screen. (With Open case and Expo Disabled / 4800 Speed)
3. Boot with 2 RAM sticks. Played the game for another 30 mins. No black screen. (With Open case and Expo Disabled / 4800 Speed)

Issue -
4. Issue appeared when Played with the same config just closed the case.
5. Also I noticed something abnormal. Only while gaming, when I increase or decrease the volume using my keyboard the screen goes black for a sec and comes back again.

Seeing this same logs in the system again at the time of the black screen issue

It's been 3 days now of trying different things. It is frustrating now. Don't know what to do now🙁. Appreciate your help.

If the problem only happens when your case is closed, it might really be a temperature issue. What cooler are you using for the CPU? What is your fan configuration? Do you monitor your temperatures when gaming (CPU, GPU, RAM, SSD)?
This is a good suggestion. Monitor your temps, but you could also try removing a case cover and blowing a fan directly on the motherboard and compare the results to what you experienced without the fan.

I use ARCTIC Freezer 36 ARGB 120mm Single Tower CPU Air Cooler, and Antec C5 ARGB (ATX) Mid Tower Cabinet (7 fans). What do you mean by fan configuration?

Monitored the Temps while gaming (In Celsius)
CPU - 65 - 70
GPU - 65 - 70
RAM 1 - 36 - 43
RAM 2 - 34 - 39
SSD - 39 - 46

Seems like normal to me.

I have a HWinfo monitoring file. How can I attach it here so someone can look and let me know if there is a problem with something?

What are the results when you have a fan blowing on the motherboard and you duplicate the settings that cause the problem. You can assume that those temperatures are ok, and they might be. But possibly components have degraded to where they are more temperature sensitive. This is a very easy test to perform.

I don't have a fan to blow onto the motherboard. Just FYI this is a newly built PC. How can be components degraded?

Can this be just a faulty graphics card? I have gone through a few forums on this site and at the end of their test most of them found out that it was just their GPU.

Do you have a hair dryer. I'm amazed that people think that something is new can not fail, or could have a component degraded. The typical pc probably costs less than $2000. One has only to think of the space program and the tremendous amount of money that those components cost and yet they still fail. I worked in final test on the Apollo program. I doublt that any computer one buys has even an hour of testing before it is sold. I think we still have astronauts in space because of the failure of some million dollar component. Keep an open mind. Don't make assumptions when it comes to diagnosing a problem. You could just throw parts at your problem, I prefer to perform a test, then based on the result of that test, make a decision on what to do next. Good luck with your problem. We only learn things when one has a problem to solve.
