Black Screen on Power Up

So, my sister's boyfriend is trying to install windows for me right now, but he saying that when he tries to turn on the PC, it just shows a black screen. Any ideas?

MSI z97 Gaming 5
16gb of DDR3
500gb Samsung 850 Evo SSD
Gigabyte 1060 6gb G1 Gaming
EVGA G2 650w

Is it possible my SSD was doa? When I first started it up, the bios recognized my old HDD, yet I wasn't able to find my SSD in my bios. Currently the HDD is not in my computer which is why I came up with the hypothesis that my SSD was doa

It is possible you got a DOA part. more likely you have a short if it is a new build. Is this a custom built PC? if so try doing a bare bones build. Remove your motherboard/PSU and SSD from the case and build it outside of it on a hard surface like wood/glass preferably coverd in static paper but wood/card/glass is ok in a pinch. If your system boots up outside of the case then you have a short. Be mindful of when you put it back in the case that none of the screws, risers or anything metal is touching the motherboard.

Also does reinstalling the HDD fix the issue?

Oh and also try reinserting all ram sticks, cables and add-in cards (ie GPUs for example) before doing a bare bones build. Something things come loose when adding or removing parts.

Question, how I would boot up the PC outside the case. Also, what does "short" exactly mean, and if it is indeed a short, all I have to do is make sure the board is touch metal parts?

I will need to get back to you tomorrow with the HDD, as I will be getting both the HDD and PC tomorrow back

To build it outside of the case is exactly as it sounds. Remove the motherboard, PSU, SSD, discrete GPU, etc and all other parts need for a boot from the case completely. Put them on a hard non-conductive surface like wood, glass, cardboard (again with a layer of static paper would be best but OK if you don't have some). The parts just lay there as it were flat on the surface. If it boots you had a short. That is were a screw, riser screw/nut or other piece of metal are touching the motherboard causing it to short out and not boot. Do try the other things I mentioned before going bare bones build. Re-seating ram, cables, Addin cards usually will fix things. If not the bare bones build is your best bet.

It seems that it was because the ram was not seated in properly, and had come lose on one side while moving it to my sister's boyfriend's place.
