My laptop came with preinstalled windows 8 from hp. After buying it i tried to upgrade it to windows 8.1 and successfully done it. It worked fine. Later at the the time of installing updates for Windows 8.1 my machine requested restart and I did so. Just after the restart I couldn't enter anywhere. There is nothing but black screen. Not even any cursor point or anything. Later after restarting many a times I entered the bios option and found the message

RECOVERY
Your PC Needs to be repaired.

A Required device is not connected or cant be accessed.

Error code: 0x0000225

You will need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you dont have any contact your administrator or pc manufacturer.

But only if the legacy mode is enabled i can enter windows. Is this a driver problem? If yes how do i fix it? (I can't recover nor factory reset my laptop as each time i go through the recovery option i find the above error message. Restore points couldn't fix the problem. )

My laptop is Hp Envy 15-j037tx (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c03870918#N46)

Core i7 4700 (x-64)
Nvidia 2 GB graphics (Updated Graphics Card Driver)

Thanx in advance for any help

You could try launching in safe mode, but I found that had the same issue.

I've done a lot of investigation into this over the last few days and unfortunately, my only option was to re-install windows. I have found on other sites that other people have had to resort to re-installing as well. But that was only if the themepatcher was installed.

If you have your original e-mail receipt when you purchased win 8.1 online it should have your activation key.

Without saying exactly how there are "ways" to get a retail copy of win 8 downloaded, which will be fine if you have your legit key.

Or, if you can use someone elses PC, you can get the ISO this way and then burn it to DVD...
I have just had the exact same problem after the recent windows update KB2919355

By any chance have to you installed UltraUXthemepatcher, or any other 3rd party custom theme programs?

If you have your windows CD you can boot from it and try the 'repair your computer' options.

However, for me I found that whatever the theme patcher had done had seriously messed things up and I had to lose everything and re-install windows 🙁

Yes!! The EXACT SAME thing just happened here too. Windows 8.1 worked just fine before updating KB2919355 and after it requested restart I just couldnt enter my pc. But the worst fact is that I downloaded Windows 8.1 from windows store. So I dont have any Windows CD to reinstall or repair!! Also I can not REPAIR nor FACTORY RESET my pc (for the error message). Is there any other way from the inside to solve the problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. ( I have not installed UltraUXthemepatcher).

Also, did your laptop come with a HP recovery disk?

Thanx Blockhead78 for your help.

Sorry, But I am not sure wether legacy mode and safe mode are same in my laptop!!
I found "Legacy Mode is an option that basically enables computers to install and run operating systems that do not provide UEFI support. This is the case for Windows 7 and earlier, as well as many smaller Linux distributions. This is because the UEFI will be disabled, resulting in the computer running straight from the BIOS, as was the case prior to the release of Windows 8." this thing. But I am using 8.1 and it worked fine normally before updating KB2919355.

By the way I tried to boot my laptop im safe mode at (msconfig>boot>Safe mode>network). Nope it still didnt startup normally.

As I am saying, I can use my laptop normally (But it works slower) while legacy mode is enabled (press Enter during boot> F10 for Boot manager option> System boot option> Legacy mode > Enabled) but normal (UEFI support) boot is not working. Is it this, that UEFI is not recognising my Windows??

I was only provided with my laptop and power cable from my provider. Not any manuals or any disks for windows or motherboard. When I asked them they told "if you have any problem regarding windows or repairing you will have to use RECOVERY PARTITION D" (a locked partition besides my normal Windows drive partition.) I got windows 8.1 free from store.

Thanx
