Black screen with cursor issues after login (account problem?)

I am having black screen with cursor issues after login. Screen goes black then nothing happens. The problem seems tied to my user account somehow (which is the admin account). What I have found so far:

It boots up ok (seemingly) in safe mode.
I can login to other accounts fine (my kids' accounts)
I cannot use anything that requires admin rights even with password (CMD prompts as admin etc)
Restore points repeatedly fail
/scannow will go to 100% verify but cannot continue after that step.

are your kids accounts admin? if they aren't admins, I would follow the steps in this video to point it shows how to change user types

and make one user admin temporarily and perhaps set up a new local account for yourself with admin rights, you can copy the folder contents from the old user onto the new one in c/users/username and it will have as much access as previous account. It only takes a few minutes to get desktop back to normal then

Login with your Kids account and backup as much data as possible because this sounds like an almost dead harddrive.

perhaps or just am messed up user, especially if kids accounts seem okay. I have seen win 10 user accounts melt down like this before.

Maybe. The most popular reason for a messed up user is an unreadable profile directory and the most popular reason for that are bad sectors on the HDD. And that will get even worse if you write new data to the disk. That's why I would start with a backup and proceed with creating a new adim account afterwards. 😉

It seems to happen a lot, i had to do it on my PC last year and my ssd is still showing as almost brand new, so it seems win 10 can just corrupt the directory by itself now, I wonder if its tied into fast startup, if PC is unplugged while its off enough times you could lose valuable data.

hmm, my hdd is still fairly new. I had this happen a month ago and had to do a reinstall of win 10, too much work to get my computer back to normal because of some of the stuff I have on here (didnt check the other accounts before though) I am wondering what the cause of this is, its a PITA. I'll try these suggestions and get back to you guys and let you know results.

If i knew the cause I would perhaps have a solution, its been happening for a year or so. I just made a new user like I suggested above though my problem was the auto login was ignoring my password and logging me in as a guest with no access to anything. I made a new user just in case the other user stopped working completely and kept the old user as backup.

If you make the local account an admin it will have same access as your old user. Just need to set up browsers and logins to some programs again. Took me 30 minutes to get back to normal

Ya had to create a new user, renamed my old profile to new profile and redirected my directories to the old one. (all my docs, music, etc are on my D drive) Kinda stuck right now though. I have a lot of certificates and authentication stuff I gotta redo 🙁

For some reason my restorepoints never seem to work when I need them to also.

system restore is being phased out by Microsoft, its why its so hard to find now. I find its not good to rely on it, as it breaks stuff as well as fixing other things.

Better to use proper backup software and hope windows doesn't break accounts as often.
