Personally, the best route they could go would be ftp up the end of the original (pre-expansions). At least you'd be able to explore the original lands no one is on anymore and after running a couple of the more major dungeon runs get a good feel of what the game is really about. I do not have a problem with not having auction house access. The texting part is understandable to prevent gold farmers from overkill spamming (perhaps a new text channel for free players so that perhaps free only guilds could be created). Biggest issue I quit playing the game after 2 expansions was the fact that you payed $15 a month regardless of when or how much time you were on it. After a while, I couldn't justify the costs with real life getting in the way.

I guess their other option would be to charged for time played since they do log the time you are online. Vendetta Online is a game that uses this model and has a quite loyal (albeit not that large) player base.

As with the f2p model, some games are able to do it quite successfully without completely ripping the customer off. League of Legends and Dungeons and Dragons Online are two that come to mind right off-hand. If more of the f2p games had methods like this setup in their game besides making you pay to do anything or become remotely effective/competitive, you'd see the model catch on a lot better w/o the bad reputation it has garnered.

That is so true...my younger bro used to play WOW until I got him hooked on EVE. I have been playing EVE for over 6 years now and they are just getting better and stronger every year. I have played a number of other MMOS and nothing comes close to EVE and now with Dust514 coming its going to be awesome.

I still think WOW was by far the best i ever played , eve is just soooo fucking statistical, control's are weird, and i don't like the fact that you can lose your hard earned gear permanently.

And regarding wow F2P won't happen ever, Blizzard above all else is a business that has a name and some heavy titles under its belt, and im guessing till the player base drops so badly that they have to co-mass servers and even sell some of them off they won't even consider F2P. F2P is where MMO's go to die, mmo's that don't have what it takes to entice a large amount of players to shell out a monthly subscription, don't get me wrong there are some great titles out there that are F2P but all pale to wow, even now when its gone to shit. Also F2P most of the times means Pay-2-Win and that sux, at least in wow you can't buy items and so on that will make you stronger then the next guy, who gives a crap if you have a shiny 20eu mount and the guy next to you does wooptiedo.

[citation][nom]Kami3k[/nom]Guild Wars 2 is also not Free 2 Play. You HAVE to buy a copy to play it.[/citation]

You should read the quote before responding to it........

[citation][nom]knightmike[/nom]I haven't found a good F2P model yet. My brothers and I are currently playing LOTRO. It's scary because you can actually end up spending twice as much as you need to if you don't purchase things in the proper order. e.g. You decide to pay to have your gold cap removed. A couple of days later you decide to become a VIP member which you discover also removes the gold cap.I plan to try Star Wars and Planetside 2 soon. Although I don't think those will be any better. I'd rather pay a subscription for a game so I don't have to do hours of research for micro-transactions. I think a subscription should give you full access to the game including "expansions". EQ really turned me off to the subscription model plus having to buy expansions. I will give Blizzard credit. They have been fairly modest with their expansion releases.[/citation]

Try Aion Online it's free everything is unlocked if you like eq2 it's alot like that but nothing is held back.
It's funny every mmo that has gone free doubled their income guess blizzard is not interested in making money.
