It truly is rare. Only two companies encourage this kind of work these days: VALVe and Blizzard.

Agreed! Valve & Blizzard are the only 2 companies that I feel truly still think about their customers. Both will continue simply because Valve makes amazing games and has steam, while Blizzard's IP are monumental in size.
