ok so i just recieved a free blu ray player as a gift and im wondering how i could hook it up to my monitor, its a lcd monitor with avg and dvi i think its called, anyhow. how would i go about hooking it up to my monitor, just avg to hdmi? and also if i would want to also have my laptop going to my monitor what would i have to do? at the moment i have a xbox 360 and my laptop going to my monitor using a little converter box to switch between computer on screen to xbox on screen. so any pointers will be appreciated.

or you know what, forget the VGA stuff, how would i go about doing it with DVI, i can just switch my monitor to that input or output and make it alot easier

that would work however you may need to change up what cables you are using.

xbox should have a cable which ends in a hdmi plug so it would hook right up.
pc should have a hdmi plug (but if its dvi you can use a dvi to hdmi cable)
br player should have a regular hdmi plug

you would need to use a hdmi-to-dvi cable or a hdmi/dvi adapter to connect up to the monitor.

---

now that i think about it... its probably easier to use a hdmi switch (instead of a dvi switch) but you might need to buy a few new cables to do so.

well my xbox and laptop are hooked up through vga which is fine i just hit the button on my monitor to switch from dvi to vga inputs, so if i get what i linked the box, i need a dvi to hdmi cable from my monitor to the box, and from the box i need a regular hdmi to hdmi for the blu ray. correct? and how would i get sound from the blu ray if dvi doesnt support audio?

dvi-d does support audio. a better question would be does your monitor even have speakers?

honestly i'm not sure anymore how you have things hooked up since you made many conflicting statements.

if you are using both the ports on your monitor (the vga AND the dvi) and the converter box is just an adapter then you could just use a 2x1 switch (instead of a 3x1)

if you want everything to go into one port on the monitor then you would use a 3x1.

hell..... its even possible to use a splitter... thats a cheaper option but you need to make sure not to have both input sources on at once (a switch is fool-proof pretty much).

---

personally if it was MY system i would likely use a hdmi switch. you might need to get cables since you were hooked up via vga before (which is not as good as hdmi or dvi) however in the end everything would be much better off.

your choice.

honestly what way you connect depends on what your outputs are.

what outputs are available on the PC? if its either dvi or hdmi then i would use a 3x1 switch. if its only VGA (which would mean you have a really old pc) then i would just hook that up to the monitor via vga and have the other two sources on a 2x1 hdmi switch

My monitor has no speakers, my pc has only vga port which is connected via vga to my monitor, the computer is only 3-4 years old lol. just take vga out of the picture, think hdmi and dvi. and why would i need a 2x1 switch if im only hooking up a blu ray? shouldnt it be just 1x1? xbox and pc are hooked up vga style lol, i want to use the dvi port on my monitor. hopefully that thinned things out a little bit, i have it mostly figured out, just the audio is what i dont know.

My monitor has no speakers
then you dont need to worry about the dvi port not having audio.....

xbox and pc are hooked up vga style
it would have been easier if you clarified this from the start.

for now just set the idea of a switcher off to the side. now that you finally have your connection scheme clarified lets worry about the br player audio.

also.. how are you getting audio from your xbox and pc right now?

-----

before we can make any conclusions...

what model blueray player?

also.... what kind of outputs does it have?

ok, i have 2 different stereo systems for each one, it sounds cluttered but it isnt, one going straight to my computer. the xbox has the vga with the red/yellow so i have the vga hooked to the converter and the re/yellow going to the stereo unit. mainly because i can have 2 different sounds going on like if im playing xbox and need to watch a youtube video i can with sound without having to switch stuff.

blu ray disc/dvd player BP135

it has a usb in front, the hdmi to tv (in this case monitor) and the ac in(power)

the problem with hdmi only output is that if the content is protected (hdcp) then it may not work with non-hdcp compliant devices.

also that it is digital but 3.5mm sound is analog so that needs a converter.

this device is one which should do what you want...HOWEVER..... i do not think it is hdcp compliant so it might not work with a blueray disk player (which i think ALL are hdcp).
http://www.ebay.com/itm/View-HD-Premium-HDMI-to-HDMI-SPDIF-RCA-L-R-Audio-Extractor-Converter-2013-/400623637638

this second device does the same thing (with some more options) however includes hdcp support so its virtually guaranteed to work.

both would need:

-rca white+red to stereo 3.5mm jack adapter (you can use an adapter box and two cables or just an adapter cable)
-3.5mm stereo jack splitter
-hdmi to dvi cable for the output to the monitor.

you could then just hook the br player up to one of the stereos and to the dvi on your monitor and everything should work fine.

------------------

yes... i know the second option is expensive ($99 seems crazy to me too) but most of the HDCP compliant audio split off adapters i found were all this expensive. if you can find something that has hdcp support and is cheaper... good luck to you however something like this is what you need.

as for the first option....it could work or it could not work. its a gamble. the lack of listed hdcp support has me worried that it will not work with your blueray player (though it would probably have worked with such things like a hdmi computer output for example)

------------------

anyways... something like this is what you need.

hmm this part seems expensive but needed lol.

ok so i have the red/white to 3.5mm, i have the 3.5mm splitter.

so total i will need 1x hdmi to hdmi
1x hdmi to dvi
1x splitter
1x R/W cable to 3.5mm
and thats it?

if by "hdmi to hdmi" you mean that conversion box which splits off the audio? then yes i believe that will work.

..... i know its expensive and perhaps you can find one cheaper... but i was unable to find one both "cheap" and having it support "hdcp".

hdmi plays nice with digital inputs (like if your device accepted hdmi, digital coax or optical spdif) but doesnt play so nice with analog devices (since a DAC is needed ((digital analog converter)) which is one reason why that little box you need is so expensive)

in any case good luck.

hold on lol, what do you mean by that?
if by "hdmi to hdmi" you mean that conversion box which splits off the audio? then yes i believe that will work.
i would need an hdmi to hdmi cable to run from the Blu ray to the box correct? and then the hdmi to dvi from there and the audio.

and out of curiosity, if i got this http://www.amazon.com/Aftermarket-Product-Female-Splitter-Adapter/dp/B009LVVTSQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1387151819&sr=8-1&keywords=hdmi+splitter+cable+1+in+2+out

and hooked the blu ray to it and monitor to it and got this http://www.ebay.com/itm/HDMI-Audio-Decoder-Converter-Digital-Audio-HDMI-to-Analog-Stereo-Audio-Adapter/360794759104?rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D261%26meid%3D3425161756262574215%26pid%3D100005%26prg%3D1088%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D221156873930%26

and hooked that splitter to this box then the R/W from it to the stereo splitter? would that work?

alrighty then so that will be what im doing, cheapest way, maybe it will work, but thanks for your time and help bud, highly appreciated.
