So let's see a hypothetical increase of a few cents in plastic cost per disc, probably warrants an increase of $5 or so for Blu-Ray since they're already at cost with $40 movies. ;-) j/k, increased cost is real, but what the customer sees is probably only an excuse.

Realistically the increased cost is no more than two or three at the amount of material in a disc. After all PolyCarbonate is very cheap material compared to high performance grades like PolyEtherImmide. I have no breakdown on disk cost, but would assume that the lion share of a sales price in discs is in copyrights and manufacturing process.

2012 is right around the corner man

[citation][nom]dimar[/nom]Try streaming HD / Blu-Ray at 40Mbps over internet? Then say that it's obsolete! Go back to school[/citation]
Virgin Media have 50Mbps internet all over the UK and have 100Mbps in selected trial areas. Not difficult.

Blue Ray and DVD are digital. You must be referring to digital downloading.
The price will not go up by much for DVD. As far as Blue Ray goes I will not touch that overpriced format. External Hard Drives are cheap and a DVD hold allot still.
No I am not a home movie enthusiast (Avatar in 3D was great though) so maybe that is why Blue Ray has no appeal to me.

well here in the world that matters, the USA, pure streamed media is merely a pipe dream. with data capping looming on the horizon, to believe that we could move to a pure online distribution system is very optimistic.
let's also not forget the high prices for a connection capable of streaming movies at a decent quality... sure some of you outside of the US have lines capable of it, but without all the crap spewed out by Hollywood, video streaming would be novel at best. don't believe that? just look at the top 10 torrented movies...

2012 like Y2k...will just pass by quietly. The Mayans were conquered and died out before they could continue the calendar past 2012. The latest find in one of the Mayan temple points to that. A artifact found with a date of 2015 was discovered in the tomb along with another artifact depicting a dark/black skinned man holding a bald eagle by the throat as well. The discoveries have sent the Mayan Archeology World into a frenzy.

@ Redux Fountain - lots of 64GB Thumb Drives for sale.....

Who is still using compact discs? Were now in the HDD and Flash digital area. Hell, even in cars we use SD cards or Mp3s. An external 500Gb HD hold up every think you dream off, 4Tb if you have a wall plug and some $.

DVDs are very cheap per unit to make, so I don't know if anyone will much notice. As for blu ray though, they need to be bringing down prices to drive adoption so we'll see if they are willing to cut into their obscene profits 😀.

Please tell me that was a joke. Nothing confirms people's belief that all Americams are arrogant assholes like this kind of statement.

How is there a shortage of Polycarbonates when prices have dropped so low which means there's a glut. Newegg practically gives them away in spindles of 100. Sounds like they just want to make higher profits.

Damn you Toshiba!!! I hate that Sony this time around won the format wars. I hate because Sony will absolutely do nothing to decrease the price of ownership. I haven't bought anything remotely BR, nor will I now or anytime in the near future. I have a nice 5.1 surround system hooked up to a 65" Samsung, and quite honestly haven't taken notice of BR over DVD. I too have a huge collection of DVD's and would have it any other way. Hell for movies over 2hrs and considered block busters such as 2012, I simply burn'em to dual sided DVD's and don't lose anything quality wise.

I'm no fool I know BR is brilliantly beautiful, just not at the current price of ownership.

You may have a great connection, but you'll have to wait a long time before any companies offer 40 Mbps video streaming. I have a 7 Mbps connection and I have yet to see anything better than 1.5 Mbps from a web server. There are pay services that could probably come close to maxing out my connection, but blu-ray quality streaming is a long way off.

What is the markup for a disc anyway? It probably cost a penny to make the man made synthesised poly material and stamp it out. So we are saying we a running low on plastic? Give me a break. Polycarbonite is made from water and a organic resin/solvent.

I do believe that it is better to have the line speed before the video streaming service though, the other way round will just piss off anyone who subscribes to it. Plus, if you are going to watch HD movies streamed you may as well just watch them on TV, I think most people could afford to wait a while to download the movie (legitimately or otherwise) and watch it whenever they want.

I get something like 68mbps on my Silver Tier with comcast in the US.
