So this puppy (GBC-H20L) died on me while attempting firmware update.
What happened was that 30 minutes in to updating it was still saying "this could take a few minutes". So I hard reset my PC and retried updating, still the same thing. It says it's updating but never actually finnishes.
According this the hardware is identical to GGC-H20L, which adds support for HDDVD.
Now the updater app says that the current version is COR4, which is some kind of error message.
Can someone help me restore my optical drive?

These are the firmwares I have tested so far:
GGC-H20L_1.02
GGC-H20L_1.03
GGC-H20L_1.07
H20NC102

ps. I'm running Windows 10 Pro x64.

Solution
Just got an HD-DVD disc, and what do you know? Despite the previous troubles, I've now successfully converted my Bluray/DVDRW combo into a Bluray/HDDVD/DVDRW triple combo. It plays Blurays, HD-DVDs and DVDs perfectly fine. Awesome!
I could but I can not find the first version. What's more, the firmwares I've listed is for it's twin version GGC-H20L. I couldn't find any firmware for GBC-H20L..

So after attempting to install GGC-H20L_1.03 another three or four times and getting the same result I kind of gave up.
But, magically, after a reboot my bluray drive is now recognised as the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray/DVD combo version GGC-H20L. As opposed to GBC-H20L (which is what it actually is). Firmware version is correctly detected as 1.03 by ImgBurn.
I don't have an HD-DVD but blurays and dvds play fine.
I guess this means that eventhough the fw updater app freezes it actually works in the background.
