My custom is almost done, but when I power it up there is this red light that briefly goes near the CPU, stays near the RAM for a few seconds, goes to the VGA for a few seconds, then stays at the BOOT_DEVICE_LED. Any help is appreciated.

Solution
Thanks.

Just needed to check if the board supports that CPU, and it does with the right BIOS version.
If system isn't POSTing, try updating BIOS to the latest version:

How would I do that? Sorry I am a bit new to this.

The BOOT_DEVICE_LED is an indication that you either have a mis-connection to your HDD or SSD or there is no OS installed. Check that they are connected to the correct SATA ports.

To update your Bios, download the correct Bios 1902 file from ASUS support site to an empty USB stick formatted to FAT32.
Enter your Bios>Tools menu>EZ flash 3 utility.
Insert the USB and follow instructions on page 263 of your MB manual.

Hope this helps.

How do I go into my bios if the bios doesn't pull up. Just black computer screen, monitor works cause I hooked it up to another computer using same hdmi cable

Try to clear CMOS and see if that helps. You should be able get to Bios by continually pressing the Delete key during POST cycle however your Post is halting on BOOT_DEVICE_LED and probably requires a change in Bios settings.
There is also a DRCT Direct key 2pin bridge out function on the MB. Not sure exactly how this works as my MB has Direct key button. Try bridging the pins although the MB manual states that a cable that supports this feature is required. If not sure then contact ASUS support.

If still unsuccessful and Bios flash is required:

With the Z170-A, If unable to past POST, there is a flashback header card that allows BIOS flash without entering Bios or OS. Contact ASUS to get this.
