Booting issue ASUS z170-ar Win 7

Hi all,

Got my new system built - i7 6700k, Asus z170-ar, Samsung EVO 850 PRO SSD, WD3tb hdd.

My initial attempt to install Win 7 to the Samsung failed because the partition wasn't recognized by my non SP1 Win 7 full install disc. I went ahead and installed on a WD 3tb Hdd, plugged in the SSD and formatted within Windows (probably after some minimal updating), after that, it was easy to install directly to my SSD.

At boot, I now have a boot choice of:

Windows 7
Windows 7

The 2nd choice is the WD hdd, so I boot with the 1st choice. I updated everything, installed my programs, authenticated, everything is working great. I figured I would test to see if it would be ok to format the Windows partition on the WD hdd by unplugging it. Unfortunately, the machine doesn't seem to want to boot now, resting on my optical drive and asking for media. If I restart and go into the bios, I can boot using the Boot Drive F8 command, but can't seem to get it set up to automatically boot from the Samsung. If I plug the WD hdd back in, I loop back to the choice of boots.

I'd really like to get Windows 7 off that HDD and start entering the world of automatically booting from my Samsung.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Another case for disconnecting all other drives while installing OS. Now you probably have windows on both. For starters, set BIOS to boot from SSD.
