BOOTMGR is missing - Bootable USB

Hi all, just registered to the tomshardware forums to ask the following question:

Recently a friend of mine had some problems with his pc and wanted windows 7 on it. The problems were fixed, formatted the HDD and tried installing windows using a bootable USB. Now, when the PC starts and i selected the USB from the boot menu, it says: BOOTMGR is missing, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. After this I tried the bootable on another PC to see if the USB was corrupt or something. But on the other PC, it worked just fine?

I know there are several threads about this question, but I know mine is actually working so it has to be something with the BIOS i guess...

I noticed that the bios of my friends' PC is a bit old so maybe that is it?

I hope you guys have a solution, any help would be appreciated 😉

Thanks for your help, but I have not yet windows 7 on it, and this message comes when i boot it with a bootable usb

You could try updating the BIOS?

What app did you used to create the bootable usb? I usually get that when I used Win2ToFlash. Tried Rufus?

If you are trying to install windows but the system isn't picking up the USB and going past it (if you have Windows 10 and want to do a downgrade back to windows 7 this can happen where the system will only boot from the hard drive) straight to the hard drive etc even if you have set it to look for a USB in the boot priority list you can generally select a BOOT from when the BIOS splash screen appears, you will need to check your system/motherboard maker to see what key, most have the DELETE button to enter BIOS and F2 or F12 to manually select which device you with to boot from.

my motherboard is asus, and cpu is fx 8350, boot priority is indeed set to the usb, and i'm sure the usb works as it works on my mac when i boot it up on that. I don't understand why it would be going past the usb though, i am not downgrading from windows 10 or anything of that sort, i just changed the cpu and motherboard and thus need to reinstall, which i can't!!!

With ASUS I'm sure you press F8, put the USB stick in and power up and start hitting the F8 it should give you the option of USB it might even call it removable media.

With ASUS I'm sure you press F8, put the USB stick in and power up and start hitting the F8 it should give you the option of USB it might even call it removable media.

tried it, didn't work, i'm just going to order a CD instead of trying it through a flash drive and see if it works that way

You might have all the files inside a single folder on the usb stick instead of the root of the usb stick. Cut and paste all the files and folders that are inside of this one folder to the root of the usb stick. Hope this helps.
