My stepson bought a pc build and had problems so i took it over and found out with the paper clip test that the motherboard was dead so i got a new one and i plugged everything in and it powers on but nothing comes on my monitor. When i first installed the mobo i didnt use the standoffs and could only pop 2 screws in, could that have damaged my mobo?

Solution
Well....you can mount the MB however you want but no conductive parts on the motherboard should be touching the case except grounded conductive parts on the motherboard.

When it powers on, can you tell if it's booting?

The lack of standoffs are unlikely to cause damage long-term, but the short would stop it posting 9/10 times.

Please explain the paperclip test to verify the motherboard was dead? The paperclip test, typically, will only tell you a PSU will power on.... not even that it's fit for purpose?

Was this a new or used system? If new, from an OEM/integrator, I would've suggested returning .... but that may no longer be an option if you've been inside replacing aspects.

Please post the full system spec.

Yes i see the lights turn on and the fans start up

When you say "nothing comes on the monitor" you mean black screen correct?

Does the power light on the monitor change color when you try and boot?

When you think it might be booting, do you see the hard drive light flickering "like it's booting"?

Are you using a video card or the motherboards video?

The power light on the monitor does not change and im running it off the mobo video and yes i see the harddrive lights
P.s. im currently using my monitor on my pc so i know my monitor works

Did you reset your BIOS to the defaults? If not....do that.

...and did you make any changes to the BIOS?

Go into the BIOS and look around for anything related to displays and video. There's a chance something isn't set right.

There is usually an option to disable the onboard video. Make sure this isn't set.
