Hi, dh ...

I can only stay up a few more minutes, so I'm going to toss a few links in your direction, and then I'll get back with you tomorrow, okay?

Make sure these services are enabled:

DHCP Client
Internet Connection Sharing
IPSEC Policy Agent
Network Connections
Server
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service

You wouldn't happen to to have a USB Card Reader? How about a game called <A HREF="http://www.talonsoft.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000193.html" target="_new">Jetfighter IV Talonsoft</A>?

I've been wracking my brain, trying to find a reference to a dwwin.exe file, but I haven't come up with much beyond these two things. If you have a card reader, take it out, and see if the computer shuts down normally.

Here are the links. Perhaps you'll find something useful in one of them.

You know what, the more I think of it, the more I realize I had screwed up since the beginning. Rather than just continue wasting my time attempting to defrag a drive that sounds and performs badly AND is low on capacity, I will just wait to get enough money to buy myself a brand new 60GB drive. New drives will definitly be more performing, faster and much safer than this one. My thought was that I will consider no transfer, but instead a fresh WinXP install yet again, but formatted under NTFS from the start, to enjoy fresh performance. Then I will ask for a partition for the OS itself, is 3 GB enough? The rest of the partition will be the entire drive for programs and other purposes. I won't keep 3 drives in my comp though(waste of IDE ports, and energy from power supply), I will empty some space on the 15GB, and then ask for a full transfer of the slave 6.4GB 5400rpm to the 15gb under a folder with the E drive letter as its name, and finally put the 15GB as a slave with no WinXP boot up from it(having kept its contents , which include the Windows folder and settings) to serve as big data like movies, and temporary backup, since it might fail anyway, and trash the 6.4GB for good! (3 years since I had it, don't want it to go on suffering and dying on me)

Tell me what you think and how are the best procedures right from start of getting the new system, how to install in order what drivers, then what Windows Update components, THEN when to defrag in order to avoid those big fragments that won't move anymore.
In short: give me your way of using a brand new freshly installed WinXP drive, and how to keep it at full performance with NTFS!

Also maybe you could recommend some 60GB 7200RPM models that are fast and reliable?

Thanks,
Vic.

PS: If you need system specs to help in drivers and such, ask me!

I've got neither.

All those services are set to automatic except Network Connections which is set to manual but is currently started. I'll set it to automatic.

I've gotta go, but I'll check back later on some of those links and anything else you've come up with.

Hi!~

I'm about to SPAM you (sort of), but I think you'll understand. I'm not sure that I can puzzle out the problems you are having with your network from a distance, so I'm going to post even more links. Somewhere in one of them, there ought to be a solution to the reason the host computer is not being identified correctly as the Master Browser.

I do not yet have enough experience at networking WinXP and other, older operating systems together to be able to put my finger on the solution. (This is assuming that your PII400 is running Win9x.)

As for your Event Logs ... I'd delete the contents, and reboot the system. Some of the the messages are bound to be out-of-date, and you need the most recent information collected about the system.

dwwin.exe ... original file name, DW.Exe. This is the Microsoft Application Error Reporting. Go to Help and type in Error Reporting, and you'll see quite a bit of information on the subject. This is in both Office XP and Internet Explorer.

I currently have it turned off in my system, with only the critical error notification enabled. Start\Settings\Control Panel\System\Advanced\Error Reporting.

Thanks,

I cleared my event log and I already have 4 errors so it's consistant. I'll read through your links, but I do have WinXP on both computers so will that make a difference in what I can find in all the links?

<font color=red>God</font color=red> <font color=blue>Bless</font color=blue> <font color=red>America!</font color=red>

No, it won't. Not all of the links I posted were aimed specifically at networking WinXP and Win9x together ... most are general links about networking and network troubleshooting with the OS. You didn't previously mention what OS you had installed on the PII400.

I figured, that due to the kind of problems you were experiencing, recreating the network and starting from scratch with both systems would be your best bet, and so my thinking went in that direction when I began putting together the links.

Reading through the information won't be wasted time, anyway.

Say Toe, other than the e-mail conversation, what would I do for the WinXP activation key? In a new system, since MS has this new activation rule, I wonder if just sending the CDKEY again by activating will work, or what?

Yeah, that should work.

Check your email again; I'm going to email you a few links in about ten minutes, and there's a couple of them that deal with PDA.

pda here doesnt stand for palmdale approved? never mind...ya'll wouldnt know 'bout that cuz ya'll er too fanci fer hick talk...AHYUK!
sorry that was off topic...
but as a question, when you guys ran bootvis, did you trace the drivers and everything? or just the normal trace?
i just did the normal trace, and it reduced my startup time a little. havent timed it tho. but the thing that takes the longest is after the desktop is loaded, norton antivirus is enabling itself. nothing i cant stand...but that is the longest pause.

-DAvid

-Live, Learn, then build your own computer!-

You're saying that when getting on the desktop it makes a delay of about 30-60 seconds? Does it always happen?
And also, do you have DSL internet or a NIC card?

--
Thunderbirds in wintertime, Northwoods in summertime!

i wouldnt say 30-60 seconds...more like 10-15 seconds...
and yeah, i have dsl and a nic, but the nic is onboard, and the dsl is routed ppoe. so that is not connecting when my computer starts up. it is already connected.
but like i said for the startup, the norton thing is fine. but i dont have a definate time, because i havent restarted my computer for like 3 days now. LOL!

-DAvid

-Live, Learn, then build your own computer!-

NIC being onboard wouldn't make a difference. When you say the DSL is routed PPPoE, does that mean you have a router or does it mean simply that that's the protocol you're using?

<font color=red> If you design software that is fool-proof, only a fool will want to use it. </font color=red>

Well to me I fixed a similar delay by specifying a static IP of 192.168.0.2 and 255.255.255.0 in the 2 boxes of TCP/IP setttings.

--
Thunderbirds in wintertime, Northwoods in summertime!

by router ppoe, i mean that i have a dsl/cable router, and since i use earthlink, they require the use of PPOE, which is the software that connects the dsl. but i have the router connected to the dsl modem, and the router connects with ppoe software, and is always connected. so it isnt connecting to the dsl when the computer boots.
maybe i will specify the ip addresses, but to make it simple, i just leave them all on auto assign, and let the router assign ip addresses to the computers...since i move them around, and add new computers and remove computers all the time. just makes my life easier...
oh, and i am pretty sure it is norton...but i am ok with this 10-15 second pause...if i am going to be protecting my computer from viruses. unless you know some way to make norton load faster...which i doubt is possible.
but like i said, i rarely reboot, or shutdown, so i think i wouldnt have to worry about the short pause...especially since the actual boot time of my computer when i dont have norton loading is rather quick.
i was just asking what settings they were using in bootvis which caused a slowdown. i havent done the driver trace, because i was informed to just run the normal trace.
