Brand new 5870 and PSU problem

Hello guys

I have just bought my brand new Sapphire 5870 from the store 2 hours ago and I also bought a brand new Gigabyte Superb 550P Power Supply.

Anyways I connected everything together and I fired up my pc but when I did my pc works for 5 seconds and then it turns off and works again by itself (the fan Spined and stopped and Spined and stopped again)and it keeps doing that till I cut the power on it completely.

I think the power supply is not giving the 5870 enough power

I tired removing the 5870 and my pc worked fine but when I put it back in same thing happens

On the gigabyte power supply it says on the cover +12V1 it gives 18A and +12V2 it gives 18A and I heard I need at least 40A on the +12V

What do you think guys?

And if it was the power supply then how may watts should I get?

One more thing I powered on my pc without connecting the 2 6pin power cables to my 5870 and the fan worked 100% Did I somehow damaged my 5870 by doing that once

hi, well i guess you DO need a new psu. Sounds like it can't put up all the power the GPU needs. Are you using adapters? What's the rest of the computer?
CPU?
Hard Drive?
Memory?
Motherboard?
Number of Fans?

2gb ddr2 ram

no fans LOL
and i have only 1 6pin pci-e on my psu and i use 1 more 6pin adapter

Maybe try different molex connector to the 6 pin adapter. You are using two molex , yes ?
They may come off a highly uses 12v rail, since that unit seems to have more than 1.

550w is more than enough but I don't know how that's called a 550w. My 550w has two 25a rails.

Yah i have just done some research on that PSU and it turns out that it's has 450W and they wrote 550W on it, How dum is that

anyways i'm going now to change the stupid PSU and kill the salesman who told me and i quote "No problem this power supply will be more thsn enought to power two 5870"

Guys i still have this stupid problem

i bought new PSU Cooler Master GX 750W and its has on the +12V 60A

my pc is still turning on and off after 5 seconds.

when i took out the CPU 4pin power cable it works fine meaning it didnt turn off and on every 5 seconds

i took out the graphic card and it worked fine meaning it didnt turn off or on every 5 seconds and i could work on the computer normally

guys i'm desperate here please what the hell is wrong ?

do i have to change my stupid old mainboard ? it has PCI-e X16 v1.0

If you took out the P4 connecter how did the computer cut on? If you took out the graphics card how did it work?

and i mean when i took of the p4 connector my pc didnt turn off and turn on after 5 seconds

i know that by looking at the fans

and when i took out the graphic card it worked perfectly and i could work on my pc normally cuz i hv a built in graphic card in my stupid cheap motherboard

so i dont know if it is the motherboard or the PSU

i'm going to go to hte store again to buy new motherboard and see what happens

IF the computer doesn't work with a graphic card it might be something with the pci express slot. Does the slot have something in it?


Your power supply should be able to handle the card.

Well your right it was my PCI-E slot, i changed my mainboard and it worked like a charm

l was just reading the forums 'cos l too have the same problem.

I just upgrade my friends pc.

His motherboard is a MSI 945gcm7 v2 motherboard with built in intel GMA 950 video chipset.

I just upgrade his PSU from 350 to a 550 one, as well as his ram from 1gb to 3gb.

I rebooted and it ran fine.

I then installed the XFX Radeon HD 5450 video card. It is a very basic card and has no additional power slots i. The reason l got him this card was to take the load of the main ram which the inbuilt video card was using. he does not play games, only uses his pc to surf the net and research for his kids

As soon as l plug this in and reboot, the system starts for 3-4seconds and shuts down, waits like 10s and then repeats continuously until l unplug the power from the mains.

I remove the XFX card and the system boots up just fine.

At first l thought it may be a: a faulty video card or b: a faulty PCIe slot.

then l thought maybe the MSI 945gcm7 will only take Nvidia cards and not ATI cards, l remember back in the early years the 2 were not compatible with motherboard chipsets. ie some motherboards would only take nvidia cards while others would take only ATI cards. Is this the case?

Is there anyway to check the PCIe card slot? Any other ideas?

I will be taking back the card tomarrow to the vendor and see what he says.

I've never seen that in all the years that I've been building PC's. And you would be better off starting your own thread as this one died last year.
