I just purchased and installed an 8 TB Seagate ST8000DM005 to replace a failed backup drive and, as soon as I powered up the computer, a series of low-volume 'beeps' came from the drive. I call them beeps instead of 'buzzes' because the noises were clean and could be mistaken for a muffled POST beep - no grinding or loud whining - and the pulsing of buzzes off and on was in time with the clicking one might expect from a healthy drive. If I didn't know better, I'd guess the drive was simply 'initializing.'
Once I added the drive to Windows 10's Disk Management, the buzzing immediately stopped and hasn't returned (yet) - I'm at 38% of a non-quick format. But it's 1:00 AM now and I've got to go to bed - if it happens again, I won't hear it.
I've been in IT for 30+ years and never heard a drive do this before but the technology is always changing, so I have to ask: Is this the new normal? Or should I return the drive to Amazon as "DOA" and replace it immediately?
Any advice is appreciated.
